“Chero Chato Hike”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

Very tough hike uphill the whole way, but the lagoon is amazing! It's even steeper going down to the lagoon, almost like climbing a ladder. We did it unguided and had no problems, it's well marked and the trail is kept nice. But it's very steep going down on the way back when your legs are sore from all the climbing up!

“Wish I had my bathing suit”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

I highly recommend this trail even though it is challenging. We got to do this hike when the trail was still dry so we didn't have to use rubber boots - which is great! You also don't need a guide. The trail is marked well enough that you can see where you are supposed to go.

My partner and I enjoyed this trail. My only miss was not taking my bathing suit as we decided on the trail last minute.

“Nice hike”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

Did the hike from the La Fortuna side, headed up to the lagoon, and came back down. As most people commented, it was very foggy the entire time; we couldn't see the Arenal volcano, and could only see the other side of the Green Lagoon briefly when the wind blew some of the fog away. As a result, the view wasn't particularly impressive anywhere in the hike, but it was nice to get some exercise and to be able to jump in the lagoon at the top.
I hike a lot in the rockies, so thought it was quite an easy hike; one member of our group was sick, and was still able to make it up no problem (went very easy and was up in about 2 hours). You definitely don't need a guide to do this one. The trail is well-marked; it'd be hard to go wrong. We did see one snake though (tiny guy in the bushes on the side of the trail), so good idea to wear closed toed shoes, but as in general in Costa Rica, watch where you step, and you will be fine.
There was a $10 entrance fee, though that didn't appear to be enforced.

“Energetic Hike”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

This is a good hike. It does not take too long, but it is a fairly long climb, and is very muddy at the top around the Cerro Chato crater lake. Coming down you pass through some very nice gardens.

“Steep hike but worth the effort.”
Reviewed April 16, 2013 via mobile

Hiked up with one of my sons from the Arenal Observatory Lodge. While it was sunny down below, we hiked up mostly in a cloud. Pretty strenuous hike for average folks. We were passed by a couple of fitness dudes who were really moving! No problem for them. Took a nice long rest at the top, electing not to go down to the lagoon. During this wait, the clouds cleared for a few minutes rewarding us with a nice view of the beautiful green waters.
Well worth the effort!
