Attraction details
Owner description: Coco Loco is a FAIR TRADE work shop & gallery for fine local crafts & artwork with a special focus on Costa Rican indigenous culture. It is located 14 km SE of La Fortuna on national route 702 (La Fortuna-San Ramon). Besides indigenous arts & Boruca masks Coco Loco also exhibits the original artwork (arte DK) of the owner, Ruth Deiseroth-Kweton, who works in her studio next to the gallery. As a mixed-media artist Ruth uses any kind of material of the surrounding rainforest to paint and work on: wooden artefacts and surfaces, plant leaves, stones etc. She creates masks, vases, mirrors, crosses and paintings.

“Very Nice Gallery to Visit”
Reviewed July 25, 2011

Coco Loco is a great gallery to visit if you are in the La Fortuna area. They have goods from many of the tribes/locations within Costa Rica. It's also nice knowing it's a fair trade gallery where the tribes benefit from the sale of their crafts. Free shipping if you spend over $300 as other posters have stated as well, which is easy to do and is very nice so you don't have to carry your items back with you on the plane. We bought 2 boruca masks and can't wait to go back for more!

“Fabulous People and Local Fabulous Local Art”
Reviewed April 26, 2011

I have made many trips to Costa Rica over the years and one stop I always make time for is a visit to Coco Loco. It is like a wonderful treasure trove of hand made art. The owners Alfons and artist Ruth are so nice and interesting to talk to over a cup of coffee or a cold drink. Ruth does much of the beautiful artwork herself.right on the property. Be sure to make time for this gem. It is one of Costa Rica's best finds!

“Wonder local art shop”
Reviewed February 1, 2011

We had heard about Coco Loco through trip advisor prior to leaving for our Costa Rican vacation at the beginning of January 2011. Our family has a tradition of bringing back an indigenous art piece on all our travels as a memento. We were there for 9 days and I visited numerous gift and art shops throughout our stay looking for a piece that fit this bill and I wasn't impressed. Most were souvenir trinket quality pieces that were mass produced and lacked any authenticity. Finally, we made it a point to stop at Coco Loco as we were leaving Arenal for the San Jose Airport on the last day of our trip. This place had a treasure trove of authentic Costa Rican art at very reasonable prices. Their pieces included paintings, wood carvings, pottery, and masks. We ended up buying two large pottery pieces because they were beautiful and affordable. I was concerned that they would not survive the shipping process in one piece. But the owner carefully wrapped each piece and shipped it to our home in California. We received it exactly 3 weeks after the date of purchase. The items were unbroken and in perfect condition. We fondly remember our time in Costa Rica whenever we look at these pieces. Thanks Coco Loco!

“Coco Loco is a delightful gallery of high-quality but reasonably priced local art work and craft items"”
Reviewed January 24, 2011

We had read the strong recommendation for Coco Loco in our Moon Guidebook for Costa Rica and happily discovered we were passing it on our way between 2 of the towns we were staying in. The gallery is tastefully arranged on a colorful and lush property, in two adjacent bungalows. Ruth, the gallery owner, is also an artist herself. She treads well the balance between being available enough to answer questions, but totally unintrusive and not applying one ounce of pressure or persuasion. There is a nice selection of masks, pottery, paintings, sculpture, multi-media assemblage works, jewelery and other pieces. Both Ruth's work and that of many other artists is featured, all tastefully presented. Prices are quite reasonable for the size and sophistication of the work. When I was there, Ruth was offering free insured shipping for total purchases over $300--quite impressive, because my two purchases had to be shipped to the United States. They arrived packed incredibly well and totally intact, almost at the level museum pieces are transported. Ruth also provides written information on the artist who created each work.

“Truly works of art at very reasonable prices.”
Reviewed January 18, 2011

Even if you do not think you want to make a purchase, you should stop at Coco Loco because the crafts are so beautiful that this is even better than a visit to an art gallery. i especially liked the wooden pieces, pottery, jewelery, woven pieces, pictures and masks----well, I guess I'm saying i liked it all!

The prices are extremely reasonable for work of this quality---far inferior pieces were for sale elsewhere at much higher prices. The prices were substantially lower than at quality craft galleries in the US. You will be able to find wonderful gifts for under $15.00 and up to significant amounts---all excellent values for the prices you pay.

Ruth left us alone to browse but was there to help us when we asked, and the free shipping over $300.00 is an added value. We did not plan to purchase anything and ended up getting a beautiful mask and lots of smaller pieces. I can't wait to receive all of these pieces. My only regret is that I did not buy even more, for myself and as gifts. A very special place.

One final notes is that the grounds are lovely, as well. Be sure to look at the outdoor statuary and enjoy the fun geometry and colors of the buildings.
