Alejandro was excellent to work with. We didn't do a tour, we just rented bikes for a few days of riding. He delivered the bikes to our hotel near Arenal, described a couple of good multi-hour routes, and picked up the bikes a few days later. The bikes were well maintained and adjusted, and were delivered with helmets, gloves, spare tubes and bags for the racks. (I appreciated this even more after renting bikes near Islita, bikes which shifted poorly, had brakes that rubbed, and a bent pedal.) The routes were good (and hilly). One thing to be aware of is that the bikes are inexpensive compared to what a serious cyclist in the US would ride. He does have available high-end mt bikes for a higher price, but the basic bikes are low-end (3x8 speed, inexpensive suspension forks, cheap wheels) and are well-used. I wouldn't want to do any serious off-road riding on the standard bikes, but they were fine for your typical mixed dirt road/pavement rides.

Alejandro is who worked with our family on renting bikes in CR. We gave him a rough itinerary of what we wanted to do. Not only was he lenient with our strange logistics requests, but he was very knowledgeable of information on the area, and sent us useful links and videos on weather, roads, terrain, etc. so we could make an informed decision on the best route to take with our 2 year old, and 60 lbs of self supported gear. I have gone on roughly 5000 miles of various self supported bike tours around the world, and the detailed information that Alejandro and Bike Arenal provided helped our trip run more smoothly, because less time was spent on mapping out day to day logistics while en route.

Alejandro is very personable, put up with my broken Spanish, and was willing to practice Spanish with me. He is comfortable to talk to, understand biking because he leads tours, and has a 3 year old, so is sensitive to family needs as well.

The bike performed very well. There was a small issue with a rear brake piece breaking, but we found a bike shop, got it fixed, saved the receipt, and were reimbursed without problem. We did not get a flat tire on our trip, the suspension worked great and the shifting was good.

The only things I would recommend:

If you plan on doing both mountain and paved roads, see if they offer locking suspension, or opt for the rigid fork mountain bikes or a cross bike. It matters more if you're carrying heavy gear. Biking the paved road to Tilaran is nice, but it is steep and hilly in some parts, and the suspension can make pulling 100 pounds up hill a little less smooth, but the off-road biking down the mountain from Monteverde to Tilaran was lots of fun!

We did not get any flat tires, but if we had, it would have taken a lot of strength to air up the tires with the included bike pump. It is the standard small emergency pump that bikers use, but airing it up to high pressure is near impossible. We carry our own pump for the bike trailer that is larger than the emergency pump, but not by much, and has a little foot so you can get leverage. I can easily get my tires to 100 psi if necessary (Road Morph II). Bring your own pump if you will be doing a variety of terrain. If you will do mostly mountain biking where you only need 35 or so psi, and don't want the extra weight, the included pump should be fine.

Just to note, Alejandro really went above and beyond by dropping the bikes off as early as he was able, even though he lives 40 km from where we were in La Fortuna, and he arranged to pick up the bikes in Tamarindo, which is where we spent the second half of our journey in CR. Service was great, fast, and pleasant. If you're into biking, and want detailed information on the area, and good places to bike for your biking level, contact Bike Arenal, they will recommend what is just right for you.

We rented bikes from Bike Arenal while we were in Costa Rica in October. The bikes were delivered - to our hotel - how convenient!!! - on time and in good shape - they included pedals of our choice, helmets, a pump and a patch kit. The routes that Bike Arenal suggested were very steep - but great. We were hoping for a little more singletrack as a lot of the riding is on dirt roads. The routes proved to be challenging but we were rewarded with some great views! It is always fun to see the country other ways besides by car. We were able to experience local village life - as we cruised through villages and stopped for drinks at a small store. I would definitely recommend Bike Arenal - they were helpful, affordable, and provided great service!

My husband and I rented mountain bikes from them to ride around Arenal for the first 4 days of our honeymoon. The bikes were delivered on time and in good condition. The only caveat is that the roads around Arenal aren't great to bike because they are narrow with lots of traffic (cars pass you really close and really fast). I would recommend doing a structured tour with them rather than just renting the bikes and riding on your own.

We booked the full day road bike around Lake Arenal (north section). It was a total of 35 kilometers each way and my husband and I were the only people on the tour. We enjoyed riding with our guide Alejandro and the bikes were good quality. We were concerned with biking around the lake with traffic, but we had a chase vehicle that warned cars of our presence. We saw howler monkeys, a white-nosed coati and several types of birds. We really enjoyed the views around the lake. We stopped for lunch at Restaurante Lajas, which was the turn around point. The food was real good. It started raining and we elected to ride back in the chase vehicle to our hotel. Alejandro showed us the free natural springs that locals use (river located next to Tabacon Springs). It’s a good workout with lots of hills. Highly recommend.
