The hotel is run by extremely nice folks, Ligia and Gabriel. Make you feel right at home. Not much english spoken but Mario who is stateside can assist. My stay lasted 8 days and was very quiet. The rooms are simpe but nice and Mario assures me the TV's are on the way so that you can catch your favorite sport. The internet can get spotty but usually it's available. If you aren't renting a car you are a $6/8 dollar taxi ride from the city, less than 10 minutes. Check around town for your tour prices as there seem to be wide varations. Also, most important as La Fortuna is 3 hours away from SJO ask Mario to help arrange transport so that you don't have to drop $150 to the airport pirates. TIP: If you can make arrangements with an outfit called Interbus to pick you up at a near the airport hotel (they don't pick up at the airport) the trip will cost $40 per person to La Fortuna from San Jose.
Enjoy your vacation, PURA VIDA!

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed suitable.

This was an excellent, homey place to stay. Ligia and Mario made us feel very much at home and were very helpful. Even though our spanish was pathetic, we were able to communicate just fine with them. She speaks english well enough to make it work. The rooms were spotless and very quiet. Much better than staying in town!

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed excellent

I stayed in the Arenal Volcano/ San Ramon/ La Fortuna area for 5 days. I had a great experience overall and Mario and Ligia from Lavas del Arenal played a huge part of that. Before I had even arrived in Costa Rica, Mario helped me set up my tours for the week as well as arrange for a taxi to pick me up at the airport/ drop me off as well. My room was nice, A/C, mini fridge, microwave, hot shower, free wireless internet. It felt like a studio apartment. Outside was a nice, well maintained garden area with an open air covered seating area where breakfast was served. Breakfast was prepared by Ligia every morning when you are ready. It usually consisted of fruit (bananas, papaya, pineapple was regular but there are also tangerine, orange and mamón chino trees on the grounds among other things), orange juice/ coffee and a main breakfast dish like an omelette, toast etc. While I was there I borrowed Ligia's husband's bicycle and went for a ride. There is a little shop within walking distance of the hotel which also accepts credit cards. I was able to do my entire trip using my VISA credit card (taxi, tours/ activities, food). All of the tours, someone picked me up at the hotel usually at no extra cost (some do charge a pick up fee but more of an exception than the norm).

a little hard to find. just south of la fortuna, in a country setting. up a rocky road flanked w/cows and chickens. this 10 unit motel was nicely landscaped w/ flowers, fruit trees, tropical plants, and a little creek running at the rear of the property. the room itself was clean and spartan. after a 3 hr plane ride and 4 hrs up a super-twisty road through small towns w/ cars, farm vehicles, semis, and busses, we were tired. ate dinner in la fortuna, and then found the motel. we would be the only guests that nite. it poured rain, but we weren't going anywhere.
in the morning , the owner alycia, cooked us breakfast outside on the patio, decorated w/ fresh flowers from her gardens. fresh fruit, eggs, ham, juice. it was just what we need for our first night in costa rica. we left after breakfast to explore the small town of la fortuna, drive out to the lake (w/ a dam) and find the tabacon resort for our next two nights.
