“Great Service and Awesome View”
Reviewed July 13, 2010

We stayed at Gringo Pete's Too for only one night, but I was very impressed by it. For only $6 a night per person (with a private bath) it was perfect for our group of 5 twenty-something backpackers. The rooms were clean, if modest, and the provided kitchen was nice and wonderful to have in La Fortuna. The best part of our stay here was Carlos--or Mr. Lava Lava--who took us up to the volcano for lava viewing and a stay at a hot springs. We didn't see any lava, but we did see a sloth and the volcano erupt! Carlos was awesome, friendly, funny, and a really good time! He also got us an AWESOME deal to Monteverde. We were planning on taking the jeep-boat-jeep transport to Monteverde (est.$35) from La Fortuna and then zipling (est. $49) once we got there. Carlos had a deal for $50 for both zipling at Extreme Zipline in Monteverde and the jeep-boat-jeep transport. We saved a bundle!!

The hostel is very cheap and clean and has very good factilities. So it is perfect for backpackers.
The owner 'Pete' is a little grumpy though. Especially in the morning.
Overall a very nice hostel :)

A group of 5 college students, including me, were in La Fortuna for a few days. We were met at the bus stop by Mario, from Cabinas Jerry, who was pushy enough to convince us to go with him. After a day of being harrassed to buy tours, and, when we bought tours somewhere less invasive, ignored, insulted, yelled at, and given a raise in rates by said Mario who was unbelievably angry that we had betrayed his "friendship," we went to Gringo Pete's Too, hoping to find another place to stay. The man at the window told us no rooms were available and when we said ok and were about to walk away, started saying he did have rooms but we should stay where we were last night and we couldn't try to be friends with this staff after being friends with Mario.
After explaining to him that we were being harrassed and that three 20-something girls were incredibly uncomfortable and, frankly, scared by Mario, he told us that was our own problem. Two of us started crying and he told us to go away, that we had our own free will and we should've asked him before.
What kind of man turns down offering a safe haven to a few scared girls on the basis of a personal affront when they don't even know him, and what kind of business plan was this anyway?
I was so angry, hurt, and incredibly disappointed by the incredibly juvenile staff. I can't believe anyone, especially a couple of young girls, could be treated this way by any person, particularly someone in hospitality.

We stayed here for two nights while traveling through La Fortuna and couldn't have had a better experience. We called Gringo Petes on the bus ride to La Fortuna and he had us call Gringo Petes Too. We could not have had a better experience. Met some other European and Australian travellers on the bus ride and we all decided to stay in the same place. The first night we got pretty drunk and rowdy and no one said anything (we were the only group in the hostel but Mr Lava lives there with his family). Mr. Lava gave us the best deal in town (We asked at least 10 of the places in town) on our tours and we had a blast! Great place to stay, clean, not so quiet due to people like us, but that's what you get when you stay in a hostel... Mr Lava has a few towels and sheets but you may want to bring your own in case he is crowded. Do not listen to the people at the bus station in La Fortuna. They try to tell you the places you want to stay are booked and sell you over priced tours and try to get you to stay in their hostel. We experienced this first hand at the bus station. If I ever make it back to La Fortuna I will definitely stay with Mr Lava again.

We are geriatric backpackers and thought that Gringo Pete's was fantastic value. Although we had booked for the main hotel we were put in 'Too' which was still in the center of town. The private bathrooms were very adquate, the bedroom floors were tiled, the linen was clean and in all it was extremely adequate. Anyone who complains about not making any noise after 10.00 pm should know that all hotels close their doors at that time but it doesn't stop you from staying in town and coming back quietly later. More hotels should adopt this policy!! It was much better than a luxury sea front hotel we stayed at in Puerto Limon.

We stayed at Gringo Petes for 2 nights, we pre booked but when we arrived they could not find the booking but they were kind enough to find us a room. The hostel is relatively clean but Pete is a tad grumpy and got really annoyed when us and some other back packers were up after 10pm having a beer and talking in the lounge area as one of his rules is no alcohol and silence after 10pm. Nice place but way too many rules for people that are on there holidays.
