This man made lake and the surrounding towns, not to mention the volcano, are treats that should not be missed. Stop in Fortuna for lunch, visit the hot springs and enjoy!

Make sure you take the boat "tour" as it is definitely worth it. You can actually see the roof of the church under the lake. The original town of arenal now sits at the bottom of the lake, the inhabitants were relocated to Nuevo (new) Arenal when they decided to expand the lake in the late 70's.

Also, GORGEOUS/PERFECT volcano views from the lake.

We viewed Lake Arenal when we took a hike to the lava beds. Views are scenic; our kids took a kayaking tour on the lake and found it very worthwhile.

We too drove around the lake on our way out of town. We were looking for a place to pull over to have our lunch and enjoy the lake side. I might be dreaming when i think there should be a vaguely safe place to pull over or maybe a picnic table even. It seems that nothing gets developed for the non-paying public. We did not have clear enough weather to have the view on the volcano, but the hills are very lovely.

We boated across the lake to meet up with our tour guide. Luckily the skies cleared and we were able to see the volcano. The surrounding hills are gorgeous and kept us snapping photos throughout the short ride.
