My mom and I stayed here when we began our trip in Costa Rica. It costs about $6.50 to get there from the airport. The Taxi to the airport is free at the end of the trip! They have breakfast included every morning which is delicious! You get coffee, juice, fruit, eggs, bacon, etc etc. It's in the heart of Alajuela with access to banks, stores, beautiful scenery and more. Clean comfortable rooms and spacious bathrooms. It is definitely worth a stay. Beware, If you come during rainy season don't slip on the tiles! They become as slippery as ice.

Room Tip: Room 7 and 8 are big rooms and located across the courtyard from the rest of the rooms.

Thank you to the wonderful and friendly staff of Los Volcanes who made our trip to Costa Rica begin and end so beautifully and comfortably!
You really can't go wrong staying at Los Volcanes- it is charming and hospitable, the desk staff give you the best information to find your bearings in the area (for running errands, recommending restaurants, etc.), the breakfast is nice and served in an open terrace with a little fountain with tasty coffee... PLUS they transport you to/from the airport which is very close and convenient.
The rooms are basic but tastefully designed and include Wifi and in a safe area near a park and in walking distance to restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarket, etc. I wish I would have taken their recommendation to visit Volcan Poas only 30-40 min away but I guess I'll have to save that for my next trip!
If you need a lovely place to stay on your way in and out of Costa Rica for your other excursions and adventures, stay here!

We stayed our last night in Costa Rica at Los Volcanes. The location is perfect, only minutes from the airport. The ambiance, like a hidden gem! When you walk in through the gated entrance you are greeted by the soothing sounds of trickling water from the fountain and beautiful landscape, lit with gentle lighting to take you on your path. The rooms were very classy and elegant, yet warm and relaxing. The outdoor patio and courtyard areas were out of a tropical oasis. Quiet fountains, dim lights, charming staff and wonderful food. Quiet, charming, convenient, also had internet, which was so great! The owners and staff were so helpful and accomodating. I would definately recommend it to anyone and will definately go back!!

We were pleased with the convenient location of Los Volcanes. My girlfriend most certainly did not want to travel far after her long flight. We were received with a warm welcome and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. They offer a lovely breakfast with a pleasant atmosphere. There is restaurants’ in walking distance and we found a Mexican place a few blocks away to be decent. I would recommend this hotel to a friend.

We stayed there on our first and last nights in Costa Rica and it worked out great. On our first night, we didn't arrive until 1am due to various flight delays and problems, and it looked completely closed and locked down but they have an elaborate video recording system and we were buzzed in right away.
Our first night, we got room 15....avoid this, and the other rooms in the front (14, 15, 16 I think) if at all possible. Even after travelling for 15 hours, we couldn't sleep! Cars seemed to zoom by all night and blare their horns, and the skylight in the room is kind of open to the outside, so there was no noise filter. Bed was comfortable and room was clean, but the noise ruined it :(
Our last night, we asked for a room in the back and got room 7, right off the courtyard. WHAT a difference! It was clean, comfortable, and most importantly, QUIET. Slept amazingly well and woke up feeling refreshed.
The (free) breakfast is really good, and there's no gallo pinto (a rareity). Coffee, smoothie or juice, fruit and granola, eggs, toast, bacon. Tons of food, super friendly staff. Knocks the socks off the nearby Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn - you get good Costa Rican charm at half the price.
The taxi ride is less than $10 from the airport, and they provide a free taxi TO the airport.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the back!

Our family group of five adults stayed at Los Volcanes on our first and last nights in Costa Rica. It is very convenient to the airport and a wonderful introduction to the country. We stayed in the superior rooms, which are built around a small courtyard with trickling fountain, and found them quite comfortable. Breakfast was served on the patio and everything was prepared to order. We had wonderful fruit smoothies, plates of fresh fruit, bacon, eggs, toast, and lots of coffee. Our host, Jose Quesada, was extremely helpful both before our arrival (helping us with car rental, for example) and during our brief stay. We didn't see much of the neighborhood since it was dark when we arrived, but felt safe walking to neighborhood restaurants recommended by the hotel. The night staff, a charming young man whose name I never learned, was also very helpful in arranging wake-up calls and taxis (at three different times for three different flights!). The taxi to the airport is included in the price of the room, an added bonus. We would definitely stay here again.

I recently spent a night at Hotel Los Volcanes and found myself in a tiny patch of perfection. The hotel is a totally renovated old mansion with a lush central courtyard featuring a small water fountain. The sound of running water blocks out much of the noise of the city. The room was all a body could want--an immaculately tiled bathroom, air conditioning, comfortable bed with clean sheets, and a small TV with cable. The staff were very attentive and friendly, after just one night I felt like part of the family. Breakfast is made to order by their amazing breakfast maven, and the coffee flows freely. What more could a person want in a B&B?
