Owner description: While educating the public about local wildlife, this zoo also breeds endangered animals for eventual release to the wild.

Nice zoo where we really got to see a lot of wildlife; our trip wasn't heavy on the nature outings, so this was the place where we got our fill of local birds and other animals. Loved seeing the emus up close, and my husband was completely fascinated by the free-ranging iguanas. Rubí, the albino squirrel, is another hit. Zoo seemed well maintained and the circular route made for an easy visit. We were there on a Saturday and there were some tables of kids' activities (face painting) and a very small market.

20 minutes by bus out of town, it took me 2 hours to see the whole zoo and I am pretty dedicated. Good range of birds but the mammal enclosures are so big and natural it can be hard to see the animals which is good for them. Cost is now $20. If you catch public bus it leaves from the most westerly of the bus plazas - look for a green 'dulce nombre' brand bus actually labelled in the windscreen as Zoo ave

A wonderful place to see a wide variety of tucans and other animals. The place is well- maintained and the staff is friendly and helpful. Near San Jose and easy to reach using public transportation.

This is a fabulous place to visit and see a variety of animals. It is not a zoo in that they bring in animals, rather it is a place where they rescue animals and take care of them, sharing them with the public. We spent about 2 hours here - we saw birds that we would not otherwise have seen (since were not going on a bird watching expedition in more remote places). We happened to get here at an off-peak time so we had the park substantially to ourselves and were able to enjoy the exhibits. We truly believe in the mission of rescuing animals and recommend people visit here to see the animals and to support the ongoing need.

We had a short amount of time in San Jose and our hotel recommended Zoo Ave. We were skeptical since I am not thrilled to see animals in cages and we were travelling as a couple. It sounded like a kiddie excursion. Since our hotel employee did a great job of convincing us, we gave it a shot. I'm so glad we did! We were told at our hotel that the zoo portion helps fund Zoo Ave's efforts to rehabilitate injured or displaced animals of Costa Rica (especially birds) and release them back into the wild whenever possible. The zoo only keeps animals who cannot be re-released and gives them a home that appeared clean and healthy. All the animals looked content and well cared for so I could enjoy the zoo more knowing these animals were in the best home possible for their circumstances. It was so interesting to see the variety and beauty of different species that live in Costa Rica. The signs made us aware of local issues with the animals such as loss of habitat, effects when tropical birds are taken to be pets, illegal hunting, etc. My husband and I had fun for about 3 hours and learned a lot. Costa Rica should be proud; I wish there were more zoos like this.
