My Grandchildren had just arrived in Costa Rica from the states and we were looking for something fun for them to do on a Saturday afternoon. Ages 4 and 7. I have passed the Zoo Ave several times and had heard comments from several of my friends none of which was anything special. The kids were excited and so we decided to make the visit. We were somewhat shocked to find the entry fee for non-residents was a whopping $20 dollars for each adult compared to the almost half price for residents Really wished our residency status was complete at that point. After the initial shock paying over $75 for 3 adults and 2 kids to visit the local zoo we picked ourselves up and entered. The property was clean, the grounds were beautiful and it wasn't too crowded. We were able to take our time and leisurely enjoy our stroll through the grounds. Although, it was the middle of the day we were surprised to see most of the animals out in the open and easy to view. We especially enjoyed the gorgeous peacocks that strutted up the trails and around you showing their colorful feathered fans. They were not the least scared or bothered by our presence nor were they scary or frightening to us being so upfront and close. The monkeys had to be our favorite stop as they were all out and in full form. Very entertaining and attentive to their audience. The birds were beautiful and we were impressed they were all rescued. We especially liked the wall with the paintings of all 800+ bird species in Costa Rica. The Landscaping and shade created by the mature trees and palms created a very cool and pleasant venue on such a hot and muggy day. The kids and the adults had a great time and we would definitely recommend it. However, I would suggest they post their non-resident and/or tourist pricing on their website and advertising. It continues to amaze me that although most of Costa Rica's economy is based on tourism they still continue to charge supreme pricing to those who provide many of the jobs. DIdn't check to see if their was a year long family pass available for purchase. Will do before my next visit.
