“Skip this hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

We stayed 2 nights, one going in and one on leaving CR. A different room each time. One night was charged $116 and one was $99. The hotel is really only worth about $65 per night.

Wish we would have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard for equal money.

The place is old and needs updating. The pool is run down with cracks and needs to be redone, it's not very inviting. The windows are old and the noise from people in the courtyard comes right through.

The internet signal only worked if I went outside and walked to the office. My daughter had to sit outside until 10 p.m. so she could use the internet to chat with her friends.

The rooms are tiny with hardly enough space to open our suitcase. We were 3 in a "suite" and basically if one person was moving around the 3 others had to stay seated, otherwise you'd bump into each other.

There's no in-room coffee pot and morning coffee and hot water buffet started at 7:00, so if you want to get an early start you can forget about coffee or tea. I'm a 6:00 a.m. kind of guy. So not having morning internet or coffee was frustrating.

There's a restaurant of sorts, but I never was able to locate a menu, so I don't know what they serve?

They do keep the place clean, but it doesn't make up for being so dated.

We'll find an alternative next year.

We regret that we have failed to advertize our hotel experience clearly enough for you to have chosen a large chain hotel in advance. We very much recognize that every guest has personal preferences and desires and that not all are suited to a smaller, personal, garden style hotel. We have tried to ensure that our advertizing reflects our hotel as accurately as possible and generally we receive guest comments that the hotel is significantly more beautiful when seen in person than it is as represented with the online photos that we provide. This is done on purpose to ensure our representation of Hotel La Rosa is honest.

What I do not understand is that if you so disliked your stay at La Rosa, why did you return to our hotel for a second night? We would have happily refunded your money - regardless of situation if you were so dissatisfied. Regardless, you would have been within our refund policy for your second night anyways as we have a very amiable cancellation policy as is indicated on our website.

We also regret that you had trouble with our WIFI, however had you informed us that there was a problem, we could have taken steps to rectify it. As it happens, we were informed later that there was a problem and within 24 hours we located and corrected (complete replacement) the problem in a repeater that had shorted - a common problem in Costa Rica with the uneven electrical supply from the Government provider.

It seems that you had a similar problem with our restaurant. Full, gold embossed, leather bound menus exist in three languages (English, French and Spanish) and are available at any time. One is even kept for guests at the reception desk. Again, if asked, our staff would have done everything in their power to assist. If we are not informed, we can not help.

Hotel La Rosa has built its very solid reputation on real customer service that provides real solutions, free travel assistance and maintenance of a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We feel these are a "lost niche" in the tourism business and are impossible to provide in a large box hotel chain where your reservation is a number, not your name.

In regards to coffee and tea, again sadly, the situation indicated is not accurate. In every single welcome speech we give details are provided for hotel services. Part of that speech includes the placement of a coffee pot with fresh coffee, at the swimming pool at approximately 6 am each and every morning. If by chance this pot is empty, then we would refill it instantly upon request if we did not notice it first. Staff is on hand 24 hours a day to ensure guests have ample opportunity to receive 5 star service while paying a 3 star room tariff. As an aside, we do not provide coffee pots in the rooms as we are a garden hotel, and we wish to keep all the critters outside the rooms. Most of these - especially ants, love sugar and creamer.

I can not comment directly on your pricing differential as unfortunately I do not know who you are. Possibly there was a low season price for one night of your stay and a high season price for the other. From the description you have left, clearly you booked a Standard room, vs a Superior or Suite. Definitely your described experiences do not suggest you had a Suite. Our suites are large and are divided into multiple areas. Also the price for a Suite is more than your paid price. Therefore you must have paid for a Standard Triple room. These rooms are not as upgraded as our Superior rooms and thus have a lower tariff.
Your judgement of the value of a room in a hotel in the airport location of Costa Rica possibly is not based on experience. This is not a cheap developing country. Prices throughout Costa Rica are similar to what you would pay in Texas. A very quick look on the Marriott Courtyard Costa Rica webpage indicates a minimum charge of $157.00 plus taxes resulting in $190.97 for a room for 3 persons in the cheapest available category - 2 queen beds. Does your $65 assessed value include taxes? Breakfast? So your statement "Wish we would have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard for equal money." is again extremely misleading and unfair for future guests.

Your opinion is valuable to us. It is not important whether we agree with your specific opinion or not, there is always room for us to improve. We are continually working to improve the gardens, rooms, pool area, services and staff while offering the lowest price of any similar hotel in the area.
Hotel La Rosa is not perfect, nor do we advertize it as such. However we do advertize that if there is something wrong, or even if a guest is not happy, we will find a way to make it right. Satisfied guests are far more valuable to us than unhappy guests being forced to pay for a reservation they no longer want. However we can do nothing if we do not know there is a problem.

My husband and I stayed here for the first and last night of our trip and it was an excellent choice. The staff was very helpful in booking our transfers and making sure our stay was a good one. Edwin, the main waiter, is wonderful to chat with and he made sure we were well looked after. The garden is particularly delightful and the gardener is very happy to talk about it. The rooms are really nice and yes, you can hear other people talking in the wee hours, but it's hard to stop some people from being inconsiderate. My only suggestion would be to have a coffee maker in the room.

Like me, it seems that you are a coffee lover!
We have not included coffee makers in the rooms specifically because of the proclivity of our local sugar ant population to start unauthorized construction projects inside our cabins if they find any sugar or creamer products. Possibly for very urban hotels this is not a great problem, but for a garden oriented hotel, careful control of ants and mosquitoes is of great importance! We do offer unlimited fresh coffee at the pool starting at about 6 am each morning and of course again at breakfast which starts at 7 am. Also coffee can be purchased for a nominal fee at any other time of the day -until 10 pm.
Thank you for your glowing comments about our garden and our gardener! He is actually quite new, having been hired from a failing plant nursery up the street. We are very happy with his work.
We appreciate your choosing Hotel La Rosa as your place to stay in the Central Valley of Costa Rica! We hope you had a great trip!

My husband and I stayed here for the first night of our honeymoon after our flight arrived in Alajuela somewhat late. The room was clean and had everything we needed for our one night stay there. However, the walls were a bit thin and we were woken up by other guests talking at around 3 AM. This didn't bother us too terribly much for our one night stay, but may have been an annoyance if we had stayed longer. The grounds were beautiful, and we enjoyed a walk around in the morning before breakfast time. The staff was very nice and helpful. We would stay here again in the future if we need to stay at a hotel closeby to the airport.

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to write a review! Congratulations on getting married as well!
We are addressing the problem of noise in the cabins late at night. Due to the very quiet location of La Rosa, sounds travel easily at night and with our increasing popularity as a choice entry and exit point for tourists, this issue is becoming one of greater importance. All our Superior cabins now have air conditioning and shortly will have the windows replaced as well. This significantly reduces the noise level as the windows will be closed to enhance the air conditioning. The a/c will provide a low level of "white noise" as well!
We are very happy that you enjoyed the hotel services, the hospitality of the staff and our breakfast!
Thank you for your stay. We hope to see you again soon!

We booked la rosa for our first and last night of our trip and it turned out to be perfect. This being our families first non all - inclusive we were a little unsure what to expect but we couldn't have expected more.
The owner Robert was very helpful our morning out the door, photo copying maps for us, and giving us useful tips for our travel... He even gave us a quick break down of the money so we were feeling a bit more comfortable on our first day out and about.
The restaurant is very nice. It is such a peaceful, romantic setting yet the staff were so great in helping to make sure our young boys were satisfied.
We got great recommendations from the staff there on places to stay along the rest of our venture and we they were all great suggestions. I would definitely stay here again should we need an airport over night.

It was my pleasure to help you with the maps and money etc. No one want to get lost, or worse, be taken advantage of with their lack of familiarity with the local currency. With an exchange rate of 500 colones to 1 USD, it can be a bit disconcerting when one suddenly finds themselves a multimillionaire!!!
Thank you for your very important feedback about the restaurant. For us it is very helpful to know that both our food quality and service were of a high standard!
We hope to have the opportunity to host you in the future!

Stayed here just one night as it was a 15 minute drive from the airport. The grounds are lush and gorgeous and the cabins are cozy and very clean. There are even individual AC units in the rooms, and a fridge. The staff are bilingual, incredibly nice, and accommodating, and there is a restaurant on site with good food, reasonable prices, and a good wine selection. We had an early morning cab, before reception opened, but the staff left a pack breakfast right by our door for us to wake up to! Very charming and relaxing, and still conveniently located to the airport, I will stay there again!

We are always very happy to receive such positive reviews from Costa Rica locals! There are so many choices of accommodation and we recognize that we have high expectations to live up to! Our staff speak fluent Spanish and English and a little French as well.... though the French is very rusty.
We are glad you found our new Restaurante La Rosa to be of good value. This is very important to us as it is a new venture for us, for the first time offering a full a la carte menu in a relaxed but refined atmosphere with fair prices. At least that is the objective!! Postive comments such as yours help us greatly in maintaining our confidence that we are on the correct path to delivering value and customer satisfaction!
Thank you for your review.

This was a perfect spot to recover from the flight to San Jose - beautiful suite for my family which overlooks their pretty garden full of flowers and birds and a lovely pool for swimming. There are a couple of restaurants 2-5 mins walk from the hotel. Our room was clean, quiet and peaceful and my 5 and 1 year old children were very happy. I would definitely stay here again.

Thank you for your glowing review of Hotel La Rosa! We appreciate your feedback.
We have recently improved our services here with the addition of Restaurante La Rosa, a full service a la carte restaurant for supper, specializing in Italian, Tipico (local) and a small number of French dishes. So far it has been very popular and we hope it will be a positive experience for all guests during our high season!
We appreciate you taking the time to write your review and we hope to see you again soon!
