For our vacation in Costa Rica, our particular focus was on two of our major interests: coffee and parrots! I mapped out the locations of coffee plantations, parrot breeding programs and other places we wanted to visit, and discovered that mostly we wanted to be around the central valley of Costa Rica. So rather than using La Rosa as an overnight 'airport hotel', we stayed there for over a week. We'd have breakfast (tropical fruit, scrambled eggs, coffee, banana bread, etc), take day trips to various locations, then usually relax back at the hotel in the evenings.

The staff were helpful booking tour excursions for us and suggesting destinations. It was also great to be able to ask questions via e-mail and get useful answers. I believe what they say on the hotel web site about having arranged special day tour deals, as I happened to overhear a tourist who was staying at a major hotel chain mentioning how much she had paid for one of the tours we went on...

There are restaurants in walking distance that serve good food, and there's a bank with an ATM where you can get cash using a US ATM card. The computer in the reception area was useful for looking up information, as was the free WiFi. It's also really easy to get the bus into Alajuela, or out to Zoo Ave.

The hotel grounds are beautiful. Just take a look at the photos; yes, it really is like that. It's peaceful and quiet, and you can wake up to tropical birdsong in the mornings. (Keep an eye out for the motmots too.) We had one lazy afternoon by the pool, which was indeed sparkling clean, though a touch chilly since we were there during the 'green' or winter season.

The bed wasn't king size like at a US hotel, but it was comfortable and we slept well — and I have a bad back, so that's often not the case with hotel beds. Similarly, the shower temperature wasn't as stable as you might expect from a US shower — but it was perfectly adequate. My feeling is that you have to bear in mind that Costa Rica is a developing nation, and things like electricity and water supply can be a challenge.

To illustrate that, there was a storm one afternoon, and we returned to find that a tree had fallen, taken down all the powerlines, and blocked the road to the hotel. We sat at Chery's and drank beer and watched the workmen until the road was clear. Expect a little chaos during 'green' season, it's part of the adventure.

Overall, La Rosa is a great location to stay if you want to visit Doka Coffee, Zoo Ave, La Paz waterfall gardens, the market in Alajuela, and pretty much anywhere else in the central valley region. If you rent a vehicle, you're right on route 3, which makes it easy to come and go without getting snarled up in traffic.

Would definitely stay there again without hesitation.

Thank you for such a detailed and positive review of La Rosa! As Owner, I rely heavily on my staff to provide and maintain the service standards that guests have come to expect of us and your review clearly indicates that even when the Owner is not available, the hotel staff carry on professionally!
If you decide to return to Costa Rica in the near future, La Rosa now has a new charity that we are providing significant assistance to and offering guest tours to as well. The organization is conducting rehabilitation and breeding programs for Great Green Macaws and Scarlet Macaws. We feel that this is very important work especially in Costa Rica as critically endangered birds such as the Great Greens are much of the reason many of our guests come to this country. If you return and would like more information, just let us know!
We pride ourselves on our coffee quality at La Rosa. The coffee, in our opinion is the best in the country and comes from the slopes of Volcan Poas, right behind the hotel and is roasted specially for the hotel from Doka Plantation.
We appreciate your patience in waiting for that huge laurel tree to be cleared. It did indeed take down the power lines, close the road and also squashed our brand new road sign leading into the hotel area.
Thank you again for your detailed review! We hope to see you back soon!

This was a great place to stay for our first and last night in Costa Rica. The staff was wonderful and helpful. They helped us plan out trip in Costa Rica - getting us a car rental service and shuttle to and from the airport. I definitely recommend staying here! Though, don't try to find this place on your own at night if you're not familiar. The roads are not well marked and it can be hard to find. Definitely have dinner at Chery's around the corner while you're staying here - fantastic food!

Thank you for your recommendation to stay at La Rosa! It was our pleasure to help you with your car and shuttle needs. We enjoyed spending time with you and helping you plan your Costa Rica vacation!
You are right about the road signs in Costa Rica. For years the lack of signage has been rather embarrassing for the country especially when considering that the largest segment of the economy is tourism. However, this situation is improving as is the road network.
On our website, there are detailed instructions as to how best to find La Rosa from multiple directions. For all future guests, we recommend that these directions be printed and brought with you. GPS's do not work nearly as well in Costa Rica as in many other countries simply because most places have no standard addresses and many roads are not named.
We are also going to be providing the local car rental agencies maps of how to find La Rosa via the highway - from the airport, one right hand turn will bring you to within 100 metres of the hotel! Unfortunately many guests are instead routed via downtown Alajuela by the car agencies and that can definitely be a challenge.
We are also working with the local authorities to try to get official signage but we are uncertain as to when we will succeed in this endeavor.
Again, thank you for your review! We hope to see you again soon!

Beautiful garden setting. Quiet neighbourhood. Yet v close to airport.
Rooms are simple but clean. Breakfast is also simple, but enough.
Staff are very good at customer care.
Would definitely go back if I were passing through San Jose again.

For light sleepers: note that the curtains do not block out all the light, and that windows have louvres, so some outside noise can come in (e.g. from poolside, but pool isn´t used after 21.00)

We value reviews like yours very much as it tells us clearly what you liked and conversely what you think could be improved. Ultimately for us we are happy that you would definitely stay with us again as a repeat guest if you come back to Costa Rica!
With regards to the curtains, we have actually designed them to allow just enough light through to let guests know that morning has arrived in the jungle. Of course this has not been done to the extent of sacrificing at all on guest privacy! We think of it a bit like per-setting the coffee pot to help some people enjoy getting up more!! Sunrise and sunset in the tropics happens very quickly and at virtually the same time year round and coincides with the waking of the sometimes rather noisy tropical birds!
The louvers in the windows have been an integral part of the tropical La Rosa feel. However, many will probably be replaced in the coming year as the hotel transitions to air conditioned rooms. This will have the added benefit of providing low levels of ambient noise in the rooms for guests who prefer it as well as offering additional sound proofing from exterior noises.
Again thank you for your positive review of our hotel! We hope you had a great trip back to Belgium!

Our family stayed here in 3 rooms on our last night in the country, and we would definitely consider it as a base in the area in the future. It's a lovely series of buildings with a few rooms each spread out over very nicely landscaped grounds. The kids had a great afternoon in the pool. The breakfast was good, and it was very quiet and secure. It was nice to be in a quiet neighborhood away from the city, yet a 15-minute ride to the airport. There are lots of restaurants up the main road, and a pretty good one around the corner that you can't beat for convenience. Overall a really nice stay.

Room Tip: Go for the renovated superior rooms if they are available.
