“Beautiful Place!”
Reviewed September 10, 2006

Wow! What a little gem! We stayed here our first night in Costa Rica. Our flight was really late at night so we didn't get to experience the beauty until the next morning.
We were greeted by Berni and his 3 german shepherds. We stayed in the "volcano room" which was very clean but did have a very stange smell to it (maybe moldy?). The biggest complaint that we had was the lack of hot water when we showered in the morning. There wasn't any and being that it gets a little chilly here in the mornings, we could have really used it! We didn't complain though, our experience was still great!
Berni was a wealth of information and a delight to chat with about this amazing country. The breakfast was delicious! The property is so beautiful, words don't describe it at all!!
I would stay here again to kick off or end our next trip to CR!

Thanks for the guest review and the nice comments. I want to address the two "issues" directly.

I am not entirely sure when this stay was but the Volcano Studio the guest stayed at was a "little tired" after lots of guests . . . so 3 weeks ago, we took it apart. Redid all the walls with a new resurfacing and new paint, put in a quieter back window, added a new rustic table and chairs we had made and added new artwork and photos, had new curtains made and redid the bathroom. Almost new room now with a great view of Poas Volcano (which has not changed :-).

As for the lack of hot water, we use Eemax instant on electic inline water heaters. These save electricity as they only heat the shower water when the shower is turned on and when our Casitas or Studios have no guests there is no water tank to keep hot. These water heaters have no moving parts are are extremely reliable. I do not know when they could not get hot water as they did not let us know at the time - but this particular Eemax has been installed for 2 years without a problem. Occasionally there is a problem with Eemaxes and low water pressure - these units depend on water pressure to operate properly. We are now in the rainy season so we have no water pressure problems. Perhaps they are referring to the sink . . . which does not have hot water?

Thanks for the review and we are glad to hear you will come back here on your next visit. Much appreciated, Berni.

We spent our last night of our honeymoon in Costa Rica here and loved it. We had an amazing meal, really friendly service, and the rooms are all different and interesting, but overall very comfortable.

The place is like an oasis in a built up area - great gardens
though we didn't get to explore them due to the downpour.

In terms of getting to the airport, it is only a 5-10 minute taxi ride and the hotel have reliable taxi partners to get you there on time.

Pura Vida Hotel is a beautiful B&B located about a 10 minute drive from the airport. We stayed there both the night that we arrived in Costa Rica and the night before we left. Berni and Nih are the perfect hosts and their breakfasts are a delight. Berni was more than happy to take time to talk to us about places to go and what not to miss. Also, he spent quite a bit of time with me talking about life in Costa Rica and the Costa Rican psyche.

We had accommodations in the Katydid Casita. This house had 3 beds in two rooms and a separate sitting room and kitchen. All the rooms were large and it was a real treat to have a lot of space. I really wish that we could have stayed there longer. The breakfast consists of fresh fruit and wonderful delicate bread baked by Nih. Also, the most wonderful coffee that we tasted in the whole country.

Berni arranged for the rental car and it was delivered exactly at the time we were promised. Also, Pura Vida has secure offstreet parking.

All in all I can't think of a better way to begin our trip or better hosts. I would recommend Pura Vida highly, and plan on staying there again.
