“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed October 26, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here for one night. The hotel doesn't overly look like a hotel, more like a hospital or institute! The staff are nice, the decor is white and chic, the rooms I thought were stunning. A few creepies get in your room at night, but nothing a bit of spray won't sort! We didn't use any of the facilities although the pool looked nice...we also left before brekkie in which looked like a lovely little restaurant. There isn't tons of atmosphere here and I think you need a car, but lovely place.

At first you may question the location of Asclepios, but you will soon be surprised by the private tranquility that they provide at this boutique hotel/spa. You may initially be turned off by the idea of no coffee or alcohol (although they do have organic wine which was excellent!), but you will be pleasantly surprised by the amenities available to you, including the kitchen with a Peruvian trained chef who has a fine touch on his art. Lastly, don't be fooled by the seemingly terse staff... they are extremely helpful and will go far out of their way to help you. My thanks to the lovely manager who accommodated our every need. The idea of this place is minimalist, be ready to detach from society for your stay, and what a wonderful stay it will be (you may only recognize that after your departure). Compliments to all others including our Yoga instructor (Tamara), masseuse, and last but not least, our host (Allan) whom all contributed to a memorable experience.

Stayed at Asclepios for one night on our way back to San Jose. The hotel was as described and has a very tranquil feel. Unfortunately it poured the entire time we were there so we didn't get a chance to explore the area or hotel facilities much. The pool does feel smaller than the pictures. The big drawback for me was lack of wifi in the rooms....but that goes with the general vibe of the place. The area around was not as lush and green as other parts of Costa Rica we visited and had more of a countryside vibe.

I just got back from a four day/three night stay at Asclepios through a Groupon offer. I went with a friend who lives in Costa Rica, and everything was as described in the promotional material. We only had breakfast, so we can't review the other meals, but the service at breakfast was wonderful. Our room was a delight, with doors that could open wide to allow the cool breezes in and for a breathtaking view of the mountains. Who could ask for anything more?

I would gladly come back to visit Asclepios. It was the quiet, relaxing atmosphere that I wanted, and the fact that there weren't many other guests there was a plus for me. The massage, yoga classes, and hamman session were all great as well, and we returned home rejuvenated and rested.

Pura vida!

Room Tip: We chose a room on the upper floor. The view, I think, was better, and it's a little more privat...

My wife and I just spent two weeks here. It was a most wonderful experience in Costa Rica's beautiful countryside. The campus provides opportunities for both reflection and relaxation as well as recharging one's body and spirit. We had the opportunity to experience different types of spa treatments, yoga and other movement techniques. My personal favorite was Watsu which is a gentle type of Shiatsu in a 97F heated pool. Extremely valuable were our naturopathy and nutrition consultations with Ms. Marissia Jimenez, the founder of Asclepios. We thank her for introducing us to Dr. Konrad Lutz who provided us with spiritual guidance. Our meals were prepared with the freshest organic ingredients (some of whch are grown in the resort grounds maintained by the staff agronomer Ruben) were just absolutely delicious. Special thanks to Tatiana and Daniel (chefs), and Allan and Andres (waiters) for the wonderful cuisine and service. Special thanks also to Keily and Braulio for arranging our day trips and other reservations during our stay. We already miss the friendly staff at Asclepios. They are well trained, knowledgeable, and ready to help you in any way. The room was spacious -- although you don't spend much time in the room -- you are too busy doing other things! The beds are comfy, the baths were spacious and well appointed. Be ready to awaken to a full fledged morning concert courtesy of the hundreds of bird species found here. We forgot to bring our binoculars (a must have for nature lovers in Costa Rica); fortunately, we were able to pick up a decent pair at a local Radio Shack store in downtown Alajuela. While here, we were priviledged to witness the birth of two baby birds (see attached pictures).
This is a perfect getaway to de-stress and recharge. We highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go to a special place that is out of the ordinary and off the beaten path.

My husband and I stayed in November 2012, and we purchased the stay through Groupon. We were a little skeptical after reading all of the reviews (bad food, lock down after 9 PM, etc.) but we ended up having such a wonderful time during our stay. The staff seemed very shy and humble, but were always eager to help. It was very tranquil and sometimes it felt as if we were the only guests staying at the resort. We loved how breezy it was during that week - at night we would even sleep with the large windows wide open. We knew we wouldn't enjoy the restaurant as much because we aren't vegetarians. In the mornings we'd have fruit for breakfast and that was enough to get us energized for the day. We're not coffee drinkers, so that wasn't a problem. We didn't try any of the spa services as we were out having our own adventures through Costa Rica. We'd find local restaurants for dinner and return promptly at sun set. The front gate was closed at night, but they always have a security guard available to open it for you. We would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and families, and if we have the opportunity to travel back to Costa Rica we would stay at this resort again.

If you're looking for restful sleep, relaxing spa treatments and very healthy eating this place is for you. Allan is really wonderful, bringing ice water to the pool or spa and helping with anything you could need. The staff are very attentive. They all speak very good English. Breakfast is tea and a biscuit. Dinner is more varied and well presented, really quite good. We did decide such healthy living is perhaps not what we're after on vacation. It was incredibly quiet, and in fact my husband and I were the only clients. There is no coffee, no meat, no wine or beer. But if you're after a cleansing, quiet respite from daily life you'll probably love it.

Thank you very much for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Asclepios. We are sorry to hear you that you did not have the opportunity to taste any of our good organic and non organic wines offered at Higia Restaurant.
