Alegria Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #8 of 63 Alajuela B&B and Inns
Reviewed February 13, 2011

We "book ended" our Costa Rican vacation by staying the first and last nights of our vacation with George at Alegria. From the first contact via phone with George, through George picking us up at the airport and dropping us off at the end of our vacation at the airport, George made us feel like family. George is absolutely incredible - he is thoughtful, extremely knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful and accommodating.

Need a car rental? George will arrange for the car rental agency to pick you up at his B & B. Want to go sightseeing with a local guide? George will make the arrangements. Need airport transfers? George will take care of that.

From hanging out in the kitchen, living room or dining room table exchanging travel tips with other guests or George, to sleeping soundly in the comfortable bed and enjoying George's homemade muffins for breakfast, Alegria is an excellent choice!

George, the owner of the B&B, was an extremely gracious host (picked me up from the airport late at nite), and his place is a quiet, suburban spot just outside of downtown Alajuela. Not a spot if you're carless and want to explore Alajuela on your way to/from the airport, but for a nice respite and a good nite's sleep (bed's not too fancy but a very comfy setting) you can't go wrong.

Alegria B&B is the perfect place to bookend your dream vacation to Costa Rica. At the last minute, my husband and I decided to book with Alegria and we were very happy to have found this place. Its located very conveniently to the airport in San Jose but not so close that you hear airplanes flying overhead. Alegria is nestled in a neighborhood just outside of San Jose in a suburb called Alajuela. It is a bit confusing to get there but if you follow George's precise directions, you'll find it.
George is a true Southern gentleman! After being delayed 7 hours, we arrived in the wee hours of the morning and to make sure we found the place (we had a rental), George was standing outside waiting for us. If you do not have a rental, George will pick you up and drop you off at the airport. It's those little touches that make this place so great.
Once you walk in, the house is airy and comfortable. The common area has a lot of couches and places to lounge as well as an animatronic parrot that is uncannily realistic. The two rooms we stayed in, Las Flores and Las Bellenas were great. Las Flores has a comfy queen bed, private bathroom, and a small tv. Las Bellenas has a cushy King size bed, private bathroom, and a large flatscreen. This is the most luxurious room. The bed is extra plush and roomy, I had a great night's sleep! Breakfast is included and it's a good one: Fresh fruit, banana bread or muffins, eggs (or omelets w/ fresh veggies), bacon (American style), tea/coffee/juice...really whatever you desire. Alegria has great amenities and George really makes you feel at home. I really think George and his Southern hospitality is the best part of Alegria. Hands down would recommend Alegria for people who want a little bit of home in Costa Rica!

We stayed at Alegria B&B one night, the room was beautiful. George was great and breakfast was so delicious!! We did have a problem finding it, as it was not listed on the GPS... I called my friend who is from Alajuela to help us find it, one hour and a half later we found it. I think the B&B needs to have a bigger sign so it's easier to see. Overall, it was a great place to stay!! When we are back in Costa Rica, we would consider Alegria for our stay!!

We stayed at the Alegria our first and last night in Costa Rica. George was a great host. The Alegria is very clean and we had a very nice room. It was very relaxing sitting out in the patio area enjoying a bottle of wine.
Thanks George we really enjoyed ourselves.

A great place to stay, close to the airport, with beautiful accommodation and a wonderful host. You feel at home from the minute you arrive and George, the owner, is very knowledgeable about the area and things to do and see in Costa Rica. He happily will pick you up at the airport and bring you back there to meet flights which is a rare service these days. The rooms are perfect and the whole house is decorated with loving care. If you are in this area, check this place out first!!
