a really charming hotel. i only wish the employees spoke a bit more english, but the manager i believe was really nice and let us leave our bags in our room past the check-out time so we could get some lunch before heading to the airport. it's a really lovely place.

We stayed at the 1915 for only 1 night and really wished we could have stayed longer.
The hotel is very stylish and elegant, Spanish colonial style and all the rooms (we saw a bunch of them) are different and unique and beautiful.
The hotel is greatly located in the centre of Alajuela, 30km south of the Poas volcanoe (must see). We enjoyed walking in town and get a feel of Costa Rican life.
The staff was very nice and helpfull; it was raining a lot that night and we had 2 power outage. Not a big deal as we were provided with emergency lights and went out for dinner.
Breakfast was good in a partially covered garden. The decoration in the hotel is great and very stylish. If we ever go back to Costa Rica we'll definately go back to this hotel.

Your first impression of Hotel 1915 may be that it appears to be a dark, old building but don't let that stop you from taking a look inside where you will discover a charming place. Rooms are basic but clean. The free internet is a bonus. Alajuela makes a great base for going to/from the airport.

I stayed for two weeks at the Hotel 1915 while on a church mission in Alajuela, a suburb of San Jose. The hotel is clean, wonderful staff, great breakfasts. The hotel is old as it truly was built in the year 1915. Rooms are comfortable but sparse. Showers and bathroom floors are slippery (and even more so when wet as the shower tends to splatter over the whole room). Closet space is sketchy. If you are into charm and are flying in or out, it is the right hotel for you. It is just a few miles away from SJO Airport. If you have an early flight, or are going on a rafting trip very early in the morning (like 5 a.m.), you can get breakfast early even though the posted hours are from 6 a.m. Hotel staff will call a taxi for you if you need to get to the airport or the pickup site for a rafting trip. Daisy is the best, speaks basic English (and fluent Spanish) and works the overnight shift. Let her know your needs and she will do her best to assist where possible.

We stayed for one night only on our way out of Costa Rica. We found the hotel through the Lonely Planet guide while we were driving back to Alajuela and they highly recommended it so we thought we'd give it a shot. It was just incredible. The owner and her granddaughter were so accomodating. The place is just incredibly gorgeous inside with these amazing tile floors and little areas that are open to the outdoor air. They gave us our choice of rooms which was great. There is a computer in the restaurant area that is for the guests use which really helped with airline check in. We were offered some amazing cantaloupe juice when we got there. (This is a bonus of Costa Rica - fresh juice of all kinds everywhere you go.) There is a little secure parking area across the street if you have a car. It's in the city of Alajuela itself which is literally 3 minutes I think from the airport. 5 minutes tops. When we got back to the hotel after dinner their overnight staff was there - Daisy. She was fantastic and spent some time talking with us. She was also there in the morning to work with the chef who prepared an amazing breakfast for us at 5:30am so that we could leave on our way well fed. I just cannot say enough good things about this hotel. If you are considering a night in Alajuela please STAY HERE!!!!

The positive: We stayed in the Hotel 1915 on our first night in Costa Rica and found the hotel very charming and the staff friendly. The breakfast was also the best we had during our two week stay.
The Negative: We arranged (in person) to stay the night before we flew out, but by the time we arrived we were told that a group booking for 6 rooms (which was claimed to have been booked a year ago!) had mysteriously not been in the log and as such they had double booked. It was pretty clear that the group had arrived and management had given them our booking to increase revenue. We were shifted into a poor alternative around the corner (Charly's Hotel) which was dirty and noisy. Management did not care to inform us of their sudden 'discovery' of a 6 room booking and as such this left a bitter taste to the end of our vacation.
A warning to all, make sure you confirm bookings a day or two in advance as this was not the only time this occurred.

I read about this hotel in the LonelyPlanet and on Trip Advisor and I am really glad that we (Wife, 18 month old baby, parents-in-law) ended up staying here. We all really liked it. Not only is the hotel about a 10 minute drive to the airport, but the hotel itself is really cozy and charming. Be sure to get a room in the back by the common area. The owner told me that they had recently renovated the place. It's like stepping back in time. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
