Small town, old fashioned ice cream parlor that also serves meals. Well taken care of, clean, pleasant staff, decent food and ice cream. Not much in this town, but if you are in a pinch/hurry, as we were, this is probably your best choice in town. (Stay away from the City Restaurant that is across the street) Great soda fountain shop feel - bathroom walls are papered with old prescription. This used to be a Rexall Drug store. Quaint, good service.

Good sandwiches, milk shakes and malts. I love malts but they only do chocolate, because that's the type of syrup they use. No vanilla malts because they don't use malt powder, which is available in every grocery store. Nice nostalgia in the decor and furnishings. Very pleasant place to visit.

My title sounds kind of lame (but read on further), not really enticing, certainly not a great reason to go out of your way to visit, and it may be that you shouldn't really go out of your way to visit. There's nothing really that special about the ice cream, and the inside is a bit plain; but if you are visiting the Helen Keller birthplace, or otherwise find yourself nearby, it's a nice enough place to drop by (though if you are limited on time, I would recommend Cold Water Books just a block down the street, but then I'm partial to books).

So why would I give it a 4 out of 5 overall? Because it has history; specifically it has the history of an ice cream and soda fountain on site established in 1906 and continuing at least through the 50's and maybe beyond. I'm not sure when it closed its doors, but it's a great thing that someone reopened them for the same purpose (minus the drugstore). We are missing too many links to our past as business redevelop, conglomerate and megainternationalize until there's little to no sense of local in local anymore. We need those connections, and this is one place that is trying -- and for that they get AT LEAST a 4.

And this is one place where you can reconnect as well. Connect back to a very important and prominent history in small town social life across America - the local drug store and soda fountain - and touch base with the foundation that brought us up to Starbucks and Facebook. Now, it is true that African-Americans were very well likely excluded from this ritual in Tuscumbia, Alabama, but that's also something that should never be forgotten.

For all that, I should have perhaps given it a 5. Take your kids, or just yourself, take a seat on the stools before the bar and order yourself up some lunch, or just a dessert, and remember part of the past that you have either forgotten, or never knew. You're experience through life will be better for it.
