Several of us were traveling from Birmingham AL to Jackson MS. We had been told to stop in Tuscaloosa and have breakfast at Rama Jama--that it was the best breakfast in Alabama. That sounds like a lot of hype, but I have long enjoyed the "hole in the wall" places because they always seem to serve a better breakfast than any chain could ever hope to serve. When I saw Rama Jama, an old gas station just across the street from Bryant Denny Stadium, I had high hopes. Inside the walls were covered with Crimson Tide posters, clippings, and memorabilia that covered the decades. Though I am NOT a Bama fan, it was interesting seeing all the stuff and listening to some of the regulars who must eat there every morning. We met the owner, an incredibly nice guy who looks a lot like Nick Saban and has run the restaurant since the early 70s. And just as we were told, we experienced the best breakfast in Alabama! I had scrambled eggs, bacon, grits and a biscuit but others in my group had smoked ham, country ham, fried eggs, and hash browns. None of us left anything! You walk up to the register and order from the menu on the board then find a seat and they'll bring it to you. If you can't stand clutter then Rama Jama isn't for you. But if you want a great breakfast and you're anywhere near Tuscaloosa, GO THERE! You won't be disappointed. My only disappointment was that we couldn't stay until lunch time to try a burger, onion rings, and a milkshake (which is supposedly the best in AL as well)!
