“Wonderful Family Christmas”
Reviewed December 30, 2009

Each year my extended family, Grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren, look for a place we can all spend an entire weekend together for our Family Christmas. This year we chose Doublehead Resort and we were NOT disappointed. We had lovely 3 bedroom cabins overlooking the TN river, complete with fireplace. Although it was very cold and cloudy almost the entire weekend, we still had a wonderful time. The staff was really great.
We have several young boys ages 16 to 6 who are into hunting and target shooting. At a short notice, the staff arranged for them to shoot clays, even though it was really cold and damp. We especially want to thank the gentleman who had to stand out in the cold and pull the clays for them, he acted as if he was out there having as much fun as the boys were and I am sure he would rather have been inside where it was warm and dry. He was so very patient with the young boys and showed them all a great time. They are still talking about it , 2 weeks later.
We had access to a golf cart that we rode all over the resort and enjoyed the nature trail from the golf cart, even though it was too cool and wet to enjoy walking the trail. We even saw deer, squirrels, and some beautiful waterfowl.
There was a game room with pool tables, ping pong, electronic games, basket ball hoops.
There was so much more to do if the weather had cooperated , therefore we cannot wait until summer so we can go back and enjoy all that Doublehead has to offer.
Thank you Doublehead Staff for making ours a memorable Christmas!

If you are looking for a 5 star resort, then Doublehead Resort is not for you. But if you are looking for a quiet place with quaint rustic charm, where you can sit on the back porch of your log cabin cottage and watch ducks swim up the lake, wet a line off the end of your own personal pier, take a relaxing horseback ride, walk on a scenic nature trail, shoot a round of sporting clays, watch some of the finest bird dogs in the state of Alabama point quail for you, enjoy a old fashioned Sunday brunch in one of the largest log home structures in the state or simply sit by the fire in your charming log cabin cottage and read a book, then Doublehead is the place for you.

And if you are looking for a venue for a large event, the folks at Doublehead do a wonderful job in meeting the demands of large groups / events. I coordinate one such event each year and the Doublehead team does an excellent job of meeting the demands of our organization and the needs associated with a very unique event they host for us each year. We have members attend this event from over 20 states and Canada and all agree that this is an exceptional venue and that they do an exception job in hosting it for us.

No, Doublehead is not a 5 star resort, it is no condo on the beach either, but then again it doesn't claim to be either. What Doublehead does offer is a rustic charm all its own, a peaceful atmosphere without all the hustle and bustle of similar places like the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.

My daughter and her fiance wanted their wedding to be on the waterfront and they found Doublehead, so being father of the bride, I had to foot the bill. First, they were led to believe by the staff that the lodge was heavily booked, so they booked the place 8 months in advance. That turned out to be untrue: they were NOT heavily booked; we saw very few other folks there the weekend we were there and there were no other events in the lodge. I paid two grand (yes, $2000) to book the lodge for the wedding ceremony, another $1500 for the reception, and the groom's parents paid a pile more to book the lodge for the after-rehearsal dinner.

The place was rough. Much of the facility looked like it had "been rode hard and put up wet", as the old saying goes. When they put out the chairs on the outside deck for the ceremony, they looked like a bunch of them had been used as props in a live studio wrestling event: they were bent, mangled, and had parts missing. Plus, they were ALL filthy and unfit for anyone to sit on. You could tell that, at one time, the entire facility had been fairly nice, but now it's way past its prime. Plus, we had to remind the staff of almost everything that was needed and tell them much more than should have been necessary if there had been any organization at all.

The air conditioning in the lodge wasn't working properly when we got there Friday morning. They assured us that it was being repaired. When the repair guy finally arrived, he had all of the efficiency and skill of Gomer Pyle or Otis the drunk on the Andy Griffith Show. Not only could he not find the correct air conditioning unit (there were only two), but he never did figure out which part of the unit wasn't working. End result: it was so hot in the lodge on Saturday that the groom and groomsmen had to go to a cabin to get dressed. The bride and bridesmaids were in a room with weak A/C and several fans blowing. Because of rain, the ceremony had to be moved indoors and we nearly suffocated from the heat in the lodge. I was seriously worried about the health of most of the older guests because of the stifling conditions in the lodge. For the record, the complete wedding party and guest count was way less than the supposed capacity of the lodge.

One of the requirements of the facility is that if you book the lodge, then THEY have to cater any food that is served in it. The food for the after-rehearsal dinner was poor: extremely greasy and over cooked. The food for the reception was fair, but very poorly laid out and presented. Finding some of it was like playing hide-and-seek or a scavenger hunt. And kitchen or help staff was almost as hard to find.

The whole experience was like being in a couple of episodes of "Survivor". Don't even begin to consider using the Doublehead lodge for any event you might be planning.

Had a family reunion here. We were all extremely disappointed. In previous years we have met at Kiawah Island, S.C., Callaway Gardens, GA., and a condos on the FL/AL beaches. We paid about the same price here as these other places($340/ night for 3 BR cottage), but the accomodations here do not compare at all to these other places. The kitchens were poorly stocked-only a few plates and cups and not enough utensils, one old frying pan and one old pot. The 2 bathrooms(other places we have stayed had a bathroom for each bedroom) are comparable to state park bathrooms-bare minimum as in stand alone sink and the one bathroom has a very small standing shower . The living room furniture was very old and smelled. It would have been nice to lay in the hammock hanging outside, but it was full of holes and sagging to the ground. You have to pay extra for almost everyything($25/hour to use a paddleboat!). They do have a gameroom and you only have to put a deposit down to get equipment(table tennis stuff), but to get the equipment you have to go back to the office(on the other side of the resort). We couldn't use the billiard table as the two sticks were broken. The game room sign says it is open 24 hours, yet when the 4 teenagers in our group went to use it after dinner it was locked. The pool area is okay, though the pool is missing many tiles and doesn't appear to well maintained. There was a dead(long dead!) fish on the beach. I could go on and on about this place. So I will just say- "DO NOT GO HERE!" We all regretted not returning to the other three places we had been before. The staff did not appear to take our complaints seriously. Whoever made their web site deserves alot of credit though because this place looks much nicer than it is.

We traveled to Doublehead with our young children for a family reunion. We had to be moved from our initial cabin because the air conditioner did not work in one of the bedrooms, and the kitchen cabinets were covered in ants. The staff was very nice and promptly responded to the issues. They moved us to the cabin next door which had a working air conditioner and a nice screened porch. Please keep in mind that these units are individually owned. Ours was not stocked with basic things you would expect for a $300 per night cabin. We had no soaps, no coffee filters, no coffee mugs (but there was a coffee maker?). The bathrooms were incredibly dated, the drain plugs were corroded, and did not work to plug the bath tub. The place overall did not seem very clean. There was dust everywhere, spiders crawling in the windowsills, ripped curtains in the bedrooms. The scenery was beautiful outside of the cabin, but if you are used to staying in nicer places, you will likely be disappointed with these facilities. If you do stay there, I would advise bringing your own disposable dishware and cutlery. The kitchen in our unit was barely stocked with anything. If you are bothered by bugs, dust, spiders and snakes, then this is not the best place for a vacation.

This place has all the rustic charm and hospitality you would expect in the South. The view is gorgeous! I had a cabin right off the lake and I could stay there forever. I definitely will be going back over and over again.
