Description: Opening its first location in Gulf Shores in 1983, the Original Oyster House restaurant quickly expanded and opened its second restaurant two years later on the Mobile Causeway. It soon became known as a Gulf Coast favorite for panoramic waterfront sunsets on the Mobile Delta, fresh Gulf Coast seafood and award-winning gumbo. Classics such as hand-battered fried crab claws, blackened Mahi and fire-grilled Gulf oysters kept locals and visitors coming back for more. A visit usually includes kids on the playground, seafood platters and Southern hospitality. Along with its take-out, homemade desserts and seafood gumbo, the Original Oyster House has been sending alligators home in kid's meals, and gives back to our community in sponsorships and donations. It has been recognized for its environmental practices including converting its fry oil into biofuel to transport, its solar water heaters and the only wind turbine on the Causeway, which generates electricity when winds reach 8 miles an hour or more. in 2016, the Original Oyster House piloted Alabama's FIRST Oyster Shell Recycling Program.

“Good for Families, Not so Good for Couples”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

We were looking for a restaurant with view, and this one seemed to fit the bill. We loved the decor, and the food was decent. I had grilled Tuna, which was very good but not quite delicious. My husband had some type of seafood sampler that was truly enough to feed a small army. The salad bar was adequate. The staff is friendly, and the manager stopped by twice to check on us and say thanks for coming in.

One thing you should know in advance. Despite its primo location, this is NOT the place for a quiet, relaxing dinner. You might just get stuck next to a table of screaming, ill-behaved children whose clueless parents seem to think their antics are cute. It happened to us. Thank God they serve alcohol!

“Interesting Decor, Boring Food”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

This restaurant is laden with quirky/junky decor that is amusing. The window table views looked lovely, but they would not seat a single person at a window table. The daily special, blackened red fish, was greasy and bland. The red beans and rice were mostly gravy and also very bland. The hush puppies were so hard that they could not be stuck with a fork.

“Okay but I liked Felix's better”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

I have a somewhat restricted diet and there were not as many options that were not fried. The only vegetable option was the salad bar. Had the cheese grits as a side and did not enjoy them.

“First Time...loved it!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Ive been past this place in Gulf Shores and Mobile many times but never ventured in because I do not eat Oysters. We met up with some family in the location just outside of Mobile and I really enjoyed it. I only ordered the salad bar and chowder, but I really do enjoy a salad bar...and the chowder was wonderful. My family did order the seafood and gumbo, and it looked great also. I will definitely come back!
