“Lots of space for a walk...in the winter!”

Not the most spectacular state park by any means. There's a lot of space, but it seems seriously underfunded. The old town of Blakeley has almost nothing in the way of a memorial, and the park is mainly woods--maybe they're trying to show us how nature swallows an important former city up with time??? Strange park overall. The boardwalk along the river was probably the highlight, but it's definitely not a great place to visit in summer--bugs, ants, and lots of spiders!

Acres and acres of woods to walk through, some of it over hills and through ravines, and some of it on a bay-side boardwalk. There are board walks in the swampy areas... I don't recall whether they were wheelchair accessible... There are quite a few campnig sites. Bathrooms are right by the road, and are CLEAN. For the Civil War buff, there are two sections of the Union and Confederate lines that have been reconstructed (accessed via a dirt road... authentic!). Both are eroding because people keep walking on them, but you still get a feel for what was there in 1865. Staff is friendly, it only costs $3 to get in (basic fee. There are other fees, like if you want to ride a horse. I suggest you go to the website for the rate schedule), there's a boat ride into Mobile Bay if you're into that, and maps of the park and the events that transpired there are provided.

Sadly this historic place has been neglected as far as there being anything historic to see. It's basically just a wooded area with very few historical sites to see. If whom ever is in charge of this FAMOUS Battle site would put more effort into putting a building up that could house some artifacts from the Battles fought here then it would hold more interest for more people. It IS a nice place to ride a horse or ride your bike or just go for a walk in the woods. but that's about it. Even the camping is quite primitive.
