“Best thing in Selma”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

My family and I were in Selma visiting family for the holidays. The room had a mildewy, unfresh smell, and sticky spot in the carpet. The bathroom door wouldn't stay open without you propping it open and the faucet was broken and unintuitive to operate.

That being said, this is the best hotel in Selma. Customer service was wonderful, the staff was friendly, courteous, and helpful. Curiously, they didn't know much about the area (stating a mall was open when it had closed three years before) but like I said very friendly otherwise. The breakfast was was open even on Christmas and was a great financial relief (not much for breakfast available for Selma unless you're doing fast food).

Overall, it was the best thing the town has to offer so lower your expectations accordingly. The staff made up for the bad room.

Room was clean enough to stay in but needed to be better for business travel. The hotel is getting old and is showing it's age. The shower head was cheap white plastic thing from Walmart that broke when I attempted to adjust. Staff kept leaving outside doors propped open - no good. AC was loud. Everything looked and felt old.

Stayed there a week and never again. First night, there was a drunk college student party going on in the room next to ours. We had a connecting door between the rooms and could hear the yelling, loud TV, and banging around both through the hall door and the connecting door. We had traveled all day and were exhausted. After trying for 45 minutes to get to sleep, we finally called the desk at 10:10 p.m. and asked them if they could please tell them to be quiet. They did. The desk then called us back and actually asked us to "please put up with it for another half hour." !!! After another 45 minutes of the yelling and banging, we called the desk again and told them nothing had changed. The desk actually asked US to move to another room, after being in bed for 1 1/2 hours!!! At 1:30 a.m. the noise finally ended, the last banging coming from the EMTs carrying out one of the students on a stretcher and bumping into the walls. We had to be up at 6:30 and on a job site at 8 a.m. To their credit, we did have an apology and a gift card from the manager waiting for us the next day. However, that was followed by THREE days without hot water in the showers. After I had taken my fourth cold shower in 3 days, we got a phone call saying the hot water heater was finally working again. We had been doing physical labor for 4 days at this point and needed showers twice a day. Then we needed to do laundry, only to find out the dryer was broken, and there was only one washer and one dryer for all the hotel guests. Only good things about this place was the staff was incredibly polite, and the rooms and beds and linens, etc., were clean.

I had a wonderful stay, Hampton Inn in Selma is the only hotel that put fresh bed sheets on the bed every day. My daughter really enjoyed the indoor swimming pool.

Our family of 5 stayed at this Hampton on a recent road trip. I have to say I was less than impressed. We have stayed at other Hamptons in the past, and this one is definitely lacking.

The first problem we had was getting into the elevator and realizing it was not working. When we informed the front desk, they said they already knew. Why was there no sign on the elevator indicating it was out of order?? After hauling our stuff up the stairs, we settled into our room. It was nicely appointed, but it had an odd smell that the kids immediately commented on. My only other complaint about the room is that it did not have a DVD player; we had been hoping to watch a movie that evening that we had brought with us.

The elevator was never fixed during our stay, and they never posted a sign indicating it was broken. I guess everyone found out the hard way?

On the plus side, the breakfast was pretty good. They had a good variety of hot and cold items.

My recommendation: if you have to stay in Selma, check out the Holiday Inn Express next door. It looks nicer, at least from the outside.

The Hampton Inn in Selma Alabama, is the only choice that I use for clients and family events. The service from the management and staff are outstanding! The hotel is very clean and the beds are great for a GOOD NIGHTS REST! When in Selma, stay with the staff at the Hampton Inn. As they say, "they love having you here" is very true.
