“Good food, great view”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

Went there early October 2012, for a friday lunch outside with my boss.
View was great, food and service were good, nothing fancy, but the view was worth it!

“Magnificent view”

We booked a great table on the balcony with superb views on the Bund and skyline. The food was OK quality, service friendly, but location the best!

“High quality food, poor service training.”
Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

Indulged in restaurant week last night at New Heights. Wonderful food, the staff were obliging to our need to have our 6 courses served quickly due to having to catch a flight. However, the lack of polish of service staff was evident. Front desk staff, smile! Waitress collected my plate and fork and knives flew off the plates owing to her haste. Got scratched, though thankfully not stabbed by my flying knife, without so much as an apology. Perhaps she was nervous or embarrassed but still the captain should have apologised on her behalf. They made a great show of a team huddle / meeting prior to dinner service starting at 5:30 (We were there early) but training is greatly lacking in such a beautiful establishment. Food was superb, no complaints at all. Would come back but captain, you have to train your team better to achieve finesse in order to match your food, restaurant class and patrons.

“New Heights Sinks to Low Heights”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

My friends and I arrived and were casually waved to the back of the restaurant (which is the outdoor dining area) for high tea. We were asked if we wanted to sit outside, which we did, but the seating was full outside, so we were told to sit at a high table and wait there. After waiting about 10 minutes, we tired to get a waiter's eye for at least 5 minutes thinking we could at least be looking at the menu, but we were studiously avoided, so we hopped up and got menus ourselves.

We were finally seated outside, ordered and were enjoying the view (which is great!) but soon it started to rain lightly. We asked for an umbrella to be put up, but they could not do that (one asks why??) so we opted to return inside. No one helped us to transfer our bags and teacups - not even to hold the door as we struggled inside - despite waiters standing around. It took us two trips to accomplish this.

Then, we were halfway through our high tea, when the waiter came and insisted that we pay NOW. I do not appreciate handling money while I am handling food, so I asked him if we could not pay when we had finished eating, but he was very insistent that it had to be right now! I have NEVER been asked to pay while actually eating. Before - yes! After - yes! But an interruption to eating and talking to pay was just rude.

I have been to New Heights several times before and really enjoyed it, but this experience has, unfortunately, put me off going there again.

“The essence of Shanghai!”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Found restaurant through Lonely Planet. Did not disappoint. Menu was varied and Asian-style main courses were well cooked. Fantastic views of the bund from the outside area together with a nice bar. Reasonably priced. Expect to pay around 200RMB per person at least.
