“Tranquil Gem in Shanghai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

We stayed at the URBN hotel based on a number of reviews and the fact we were sick of staying on the bund. It is a beautiful property tucked away in a quiet street. Tranquility in Shanghai is hard to find and this place exudes it in buckets

Location - the hotel is tucked away at the back of a courtyard in a quiet area of Jingan within walking distance of the pagoda and metro. Also it is close to the lake and park if you want to walk. Opposite the hotel are some cool shops selling funky clothing - all recycled but we were able to get some hand made recycled jeans with crystals sewn on.

Rooms - different but in a good way. Our room had a sunken seating area with a raised bed. Nice wooden design although some may find them a little dark. Quiet and relaxed atmosphere with a bed that brought a great nights sleep.

Restaurant - great breakfast. Wholesome and included in the price.

All in all - great hotel. Great service and excellent location. A little toppy in terms of price but so long as the prices do not go up from current levels a good option for Shanghai

I recently got back from a trip to Shanghai, and had a wonderful experience at URBN. Such a charming, modern, boutique hotel tucked into a mini-oasis in the city of Shanghai. The food and bar were fantastic, and the service was wonderful as well. The rooms were impeccably designed with large windows and modern amenities. I would absolutely recommend to foodies and / or people who want a less commercial experience to staying in the city!

Way cool – great food, great ambiance, a nice retreat from the busyness of Shanghai. URBN is hip, but not so cool someone over 30 would feel out of place! I love the concept of URBN and staying there was wonderful. The staff couldn’t be kinder and more helpful. It’s great to see a budding green consciousness in Shanghai, which desperately needs more of that kind of thinking. My room was one of the atrium garden rooms, and that was lovely, didn’t see the other rooms to compare.

Room Tip: I liked my atrium room

A collegue of mine recommended this hotel. I stayed here for 7 days on a business trip. Location is OK, off the main roads and taxis are readily available. Staff is extremely helpfull as mentioned in many reviews. Modern design and spacious rooms complement the picture. But...the restaurant, although fine at first sight, could do with a bit more options, especially for breakfast. After 3 days of eggs in any way you can think of, you are basically out of options. Especially when rather basic ingredients for a western breakfast, yoghurt and orange juice, are out of stock...Maybe they were already winding down towards the New Year holidays, but my last breakfast in the hotel was even worse as the coffee machine broke down and due to some other mishap the kitchen was closed for breakfast. Overall Urbn is still a good option in Shanghai vs the big 5 star hotels, but I'd recommend it for a few days only.

The rooms are very different to normal hotel rooms, very cozy and 'homey'. That was really great to experience. For holiday this will be a hit, especially if you have the garden view.

Business traveler - if you need to work from your hotel room, this might not be the best. In my room, the 'office' area was in a lower level and there was no office chair. So it was a bit complicated and not so comfortable. There are great working areas in the bar/restaurant, so working there is a good alternative.

The free access to the fitness club is absolutely great - it takes only 5-10 minutes to walk, and the club is amazing compared to China standards. Though, I prefer fitness very early in the morning, and the club does not open till 8am (or was it 7am..?).

Breakfast - not buffet style, you have to place your order, and wait and wait... I found the selection rather poor (I do not eat musli, nor eggs). It might all be organic which is great, but the selection was not suitable for me.

All in all - an interesting experience, and so great to see hotels like this in China. I would recommend that you check it out for yourself, it might be just perfect for you :)

A truly delightful experience. A combination of funky decor and five star service with good grace. The staff are extremely helpful. The hotel is well located and food particularly breakfast was sensational. Stayed here for two nights and loved it and would recommend it to others.

We spent 2 nights in this quite unusual hotel, to get the feeling of the real shanghanese life. We have not been disappointed: the section is quite typical of the old Shanghai, the hotel very relaxing. The room was quite large, well equipped. Maybe more lights would be useful. The restaurant is unusual and quite good. The service is very good. I will check in in this hotel again !

Room Tip: rooms at the highest floor are preferable
