Along with our guide, Summer, we took a day trip to the towns of Suzhou and Tongli. The day started with hotel pickup in a private car and the 90 minute drive to Suzhou. Summer guided us through the Humble Administrator's Garden with her enormous wealth of historical and cultural knowledge. She then introduced us to the rickshaw which took us through the old allyways. We were keen to get out and take photos/explore the area and the rickshaw driver got it touch with Summer who adjusted the plan for lunch so we could stay in the area we were interested in.
After lunch, we went to Tongli and this was the highlight of our day. Some time was spent walking along the canel before a boat trip, again with Summer explaining the history of the town and providing cultural insights along the way.
The tour ended back at our hotel. A word of warning, when your guide says you have to leave because traffic back to Shanghai will be bad, trust them! Even on a Saturday, leaving Tongli at 3:45, it took almost 2 hours to get back.
I unfortunately left my jacket in the car at the end of the day but a special thanks to Summer and our driver who had returned it to our hotel by 9:30 the following morning :)More
