Renaissance Shanghai Zhongshan Park Hotel

this place is a famous landmark in Shanghai, with its unique curving building and blue outline that can be seen from a fair distance at night. The Renaissance name, is well respected in the hotel franchise however I found that my stay here did not match up to expectations.

First of all, as mentioned by previous reviewers, the reception staff ARE rude! I was perplexed to find that they consider the lowest price on the tariff (1150 RMB per night) to be a 'standard' room. That kind of language is usually reserved for a 2 or 3 star and not what you expect to be hearing in a place of this quality.

Next thing i found was that the swimming pool is closed for renovation! No mention of that on the official website!

In my opinion, If you are paying out of your own pocket for a decent hotel, 1150 RMB per night should get you a fairly decent and well sized one. However the 'deluxe room' as it is called for that price was far from deluxe. Very small, room, cramped, not fit for 2 people staying for more than one or two days.

I imagine that if you are willing to pay the 2000 RMB plus prices that are quoted for rooms higher up the tariff then you may get something closer to what you actually expected. My recommendation is to try either the Pentahotel or New World which is only about 150m up the same road.

From the check-in on the 58th floor to the executive lounge to a wonderfully laid out room, I would highly recommend this hotel for business or for pleasure.

I picked this only out of convenience because one of the colleagues in this trip already booked this hotel. This is my first stay at any Renaissance hotel. I did not know that Renaissance is part of Marroitt group, so I was not looking forward to the stay thinking that it was a cheap hotel chain especially since the corporate rate given was attractive despite the location.
I was pleasantly surprised to know that the hotel is on the upper floor of a tall building (like those other attractive 5-star hotel in Shanghai). The hotel was quite packed. The check-in staff apologised for upgrading me to premier room which I wonder why he had to apologise, I was too happy to accept any upgrade.
Apart from a bigger room, the main difference I believe was the washroom. It was a big washroom with bath and shower area having a good view of the city. Being at >40 floors among shorter buildings, I did not bother to lower the curtains :-) I have uploaded photos for these.
The hotel is connected to a mall. I realized that I forgot to bring head set for my IP phone so it was easy getting one at reasonable price within the same building. I did not have to step not into the cold. Also, there are floors of restaurants in the mall, much appreciated in this cold weather!
My only complain is security. There is no visible security personel at the connection between the hotel and the mall. But Shanghai is a relatively safe place. So not a major issue.

On a recent business trip to Shanghai, I stayed for 3 nights at this central Shanghai hotel with a number of work colleagues. The hotel rooms are clean, modern, quiet and peaceful (particularly if you can get upgraded to a Suite using your Marriott status) -- a perfect sanctuary from the intense energy of Shanghai. The price of the rooms is quite reasonable (about $160/night in early-February, including breakfast).

The service here is perhaps the best I've experienced in Asia. Very attentive, but not clingy, the staff are ready and waiting to help on every floor. I checked in with colleagues on the 58th floor checkin lounge, and the Staff there is outstanding.

I'm a big fan of business hotel buffets in Asia, and this is one of the highest quality buffet's I've had. Very diverse buffet with the highest quality ingredients, sure to meet every traveler's needs (from all countries). While the exec lounge on the 58th floor serves a mini-buffet in a quiet atmosphere and glorious view of the Shanghai skyline, I prefer the larger and more diverse buffet on the 26th floor.

The hotel is also right next to the subway line leading to Pudong, a 15-20 minute ride away. It's also perfectly located for evening exploring of restaurants, clubs, etc.

If you'd like to get some exercise, you can to the nearby (and huge) Zhongshan Park, which is frequented by lots of locals walking, doing Tai Chi, flying kits to 1000' feet, and generally socializing. It's particularly busy in the early morning hours. This is a lovely, wooded park to spend walking or jogging right in the middle of Shanghai.

Overall this is a superb hotel, and well worth the stay while you're in Shanghai.

Cheers.
Michael

Hi,

I stay here quite a lot since it's in the same building as our office. The Hotel is ok. nothing to complain about. Super compfy beds and nice (although small) rooms. They offer free Wifi for Merriott card holders (membership is free) and their breakfast is also quite good.
The gym used to be shared with a fitness club which was a bit overcrowded and smelly but they will change that soon.
Problems: Every second time I am here they tell me they are booked out and need to change some part of the reservation (from King to twin bed, non smoking to smoking etc) - but usually after arguing a bit you get what you reserved.

The Hotel is on top of a shopping mall with plenty of Starbucks, Burger King, McDonalds, Subway , H&M, C&A, movie theater, several restaurants etc. Other than that there is not too much around but the subway stops in the basement and so it's convenient to get around. 5 stops from Hongqiao airport ==. 20 minutes.

So overall a good Hotel but just nothing special and a bit pricey

Sincerely,.

Your TravelRaoul

Room Tip: 5 Subway stops from Hongqiao airport... much faster than by taxi (20-30 min max)

The second Marriott we stayed at in Shanghai. Didn't do the exec level, too expensive plus no free drinks. The Marriott Puxi and YuYan Garden do free drinks on their exec level.

The hotel is opposite a metro station on line 2 so good acess, there is a happy hour in the bar during the week, 18:30 till 20:30 I believe. breakfast was expensive and crowded. reception is on floor 25. Rooms are OK, walls seemd to a bit thin. All together OK but not my favourite Marriott in Shanghai.

Stayed 2 nights to meet with friends who live in Shanghai. The location is superb - right on the #2 E-W metro line which runs between Hongqiao and Pudong airports, #4 N-S line, connected to a mall, next to Carrefour supermarket. I did not use any of the facilities during this stay, other than going to breakfast and the club lounge which were fine. Room was ok, nothing good or bad to add. I have stayed in 15+ hotels in Shanghai over the past 4 years. This isn't the best, but it's fine and the location gives it an edge.
