“Magnificent Rooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

Recently I stayed in the Mansion Hotel and was very impressed by the room and old world charm of the hotel. It is a very nice piece of Shanghai history and a pleasant stay. The rooms are large with very high ceilings, and the location is great - very central.

Note, however, this is not a full service hotel so dont expect the niceties and conveniences you get from a full service establishment in regards to amenity. You will not get 24hr room service, and they only have two Chinese restaurants (before they quite a good roof top resturant serving great steaks, but this has gone.). Internet stability when I stayed there was on/off, and breakfast quality is very bad. The concierge was very good, but after that the service was generally non-attentive and poor. For this reason I found the value of the hotel to be poor.

Room Tip: I had Room 3003 which has a balcony, but the balcony connects to another room. This could easily lea...

There are a myriad of first world hotels to chose from in Shanghai, however this gem more than covers all of the modern requirements whilst taking you back to the world of old Shanghai. The rooms are large, well laid out, perfect for work or holiday and the bathrooms are huge. My room included a huge spa which I didn't have time to use. At the top of the hotel is a restaurant which I am told is great, but it is currently closed for renovations, so I didn't get a chance to use it...
The staff were attentive and very helpful and it is a hotel with genuine character. Definitely will recommend it to friends and colleagues.
The location is great with plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. The only issue that I had was finding the hotel at night. It is not well lit from the outside and with the gate shut (but unlocked) when I arrived from the airport I was a little confused at first. Be prepared for this if arriving at night.

Room Tip: I have been told that the rooms with balconies are great but mine didn't have one.

My wife and I stayed in August for 4 nights. A wonderful place. The courtyard and lobby area are very nice. Our room came with a balcony, high ceilings and was beautifully furnished. The bath had a great shower and large jacuzzi. The staff was friendly and helpful. It is located in the French Concession area which is surrounded by tree line streets, small shops, restaurants, bars etc. Short walk to the subway and taxis are plentiful and cheap. A very nice park is across the street. I definitely recommend this hotel for those who enjoy small boutique hotels and I will stay there again next time we are in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms are at the front of the hotel which overlooks the entry courtyard and has views of pa...

I booked this on Agoda for about half price and didn't have high expectations, but I was really impressed. This is an amazing hotel that brings you back to old Shanghai. My room was huge, with high ceilings and period furniture. French doors lead to a well- appointed bathroom with a big jacuzzi bathtub. Staff speaks English and service was excellent. It has a boutique feel to it that you don't get with a big high rise hotel. My room was quiet (from street noise) but located close to restaurants, bars and shops. It's a winner.

Room Tip: stay away from the maids storeroom as it can get noisy early.

If you harken back to the pre- World War II days when Shanghai was the most exciting place in Asia and love antiques and memorabilia, the Mansion Hotel is definitely the place to stay. Luxurious without being ostentatious this hotel definitely has an "old world" feel.

Conveniently, located in the historic French Concession area, the Mansion Hotel is just a short taxi ride from the Bund and Nanjing Road shopping. Several of the city's best restaurants are nearby.

This hotel just oozes nostalgia. You can't beat the 5th floor bar for atmosphere and 1930's jazz. Even though the Mansion may have seen better days, it's still a wonderful departure from the modern high rise glittery skyscraper hotel monstrosities which litter today's Shanghai skyline.

Hotel service is outstanding. Unfortunately, the food, especially the breakfast buffet, is nothing to write home about.

If you are going to Shanghai and think what a hotel to choose, first the most important thing to decide it's which part of Shanghai you want to live. It's may be part of a modern skyscraper or an old town with low houses, tall trees and a very pleasant atmosphere. I chose the part named the French confession and have not regretted it. A beautiful old building with history, old photos of imperial family on the walls , the streets as they were a few years ago on the walls, stairs with high steps. I had a lovely room with antique furniture - a table, a dresser, bed, chairs and a coffee table with a huge plate of fruit. The the only thing that is bad is a poor breakfast, but it is forgotten on a fine terrace with a magnificent view of the waking up city.

I noticed that the bulk of the bad reviews were from 4 or 5 years ago, I imagine a lot has been done by management to correct issues because I found this to be a unique and charming hotel. Dotted with antiques and memorabilia from the (mostly) 1920's & '30's this converted mansion oozes with old Shanghai charm. I read that it was also an office building but it must have been a very exclusive office building.

The lobby is large and comfortable although I wouldn't imagine you'd be spending much time there other than to peruse the many artifacts of the era,

The breakfast was quite nice with a decent selection of foods on the table, including the standard cereals, juices, buns, etc. as well as congee and other Asian foods. You can also have the kitchen prepare you eggs to order or noodles in broth to order. Set on the roof top terrace, it was very pleasant.

The rooms were great. Very high ceilings, probably 12 feet (3.5 meters) tall and with nicely recessed lighting to emphasize the height. The room is decorated much as you would expect a hotel room to be decorated in the '20's, but the appliances and furniture are new replicas, down to an old style radio at the bedside. They do, however, in a nod to modern times, include an iPod player and a fax/printer at the very decent sized desk. The chair at the desk was so large and heavy that it could hardly be moved.

My room had a (fake - electric) fireplace, a very nice touch for the sitting area. The bathroom looked appropriate for the period but then you discover all of the many features of the spa/tub and shower. The bath won;t disappoint and the amenities, such as shampoo, are top rate brand names.

There was ample storage space and a bathrobe and slippers are provided.

The only negative, as mentioned by other guests, is that the carpets were not quite as clean as they should be; not dirty mind you, but it had definitely been some time since they were last shampooed.

The bed was very comfortable. The battery operated alarm clock worked fine (and looked like an old windup clock).

All in all a very pleasant stay. The staff were very cordial and helpful with the doorman telling us a lot about the neighborhood and where to go for good food.

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: There are balconies in the rooms facing the front of the hotel.
