Renaissance Shanghai Yu Garden Hotel
Ranked #44 of 5,161 Hotels in Shanghai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 16, 2012

after staying near people's square area in Shanghai, I tried to find a modern hotel near more historic areas in Shanghai. I stay at Renaissance Yu Garden and I was not disappointed. On the weekend, I really enjoyed walking around the Yu Yuan Garden area with many unique stores. I will probably stay again

First and foremost, the hotel has a location that is unbeatable. It is right at the wall of Yu Garden (that's why it doesn't fit the surrounding area, anyway). If you want some Nanxiang stuffed buns, you just walk down and get them. It is within walk distance to a lot of places, like the Bund, Nanjing Rd, Huaihai Rd, and some other attractions. The metro line-10 is right across the two-lane road in front of the lobby. It gets you to anywhere, including two airports.
The one thing I like this hotel the most is how they treat elite customers. Usuallly chain hotels in US give anything they have as upgrades for elite members. That's not the case for most chains in China, as they firmly abide the rule of "upgrade to the next level". This Renaissance amazed me for that it upgrades me from the lowest to the club level, because of my elite status. I can't say this applies to all Marriotts in China, but this one is really customer-centered.
The club lounge has a killing view of the Bund and the Yu Garden, as well as a panoramic view of Pudong's skyline. The Breakfast and evening cocktail is flawless. The hotel staff are nice and attentative, with a smile all the time. Not like most service-sector employees in China, they have charactors, by western standard.
The room is great. The glass wall of the bathroom let's you watch tv or the scenary outside the window.
Overall, this is the spot for my Shanghai getaway. Great but not ecessively expensive.

Room Tip: Free internet, evening cocktail, continental breakfast for club level guests.

Stayed for 4 nights at this hotel as part of our honeymoon to China. The hotel was very nice, clean and new. Location is next to metro but cabs are also easily accessible. Also within waking distance to the Bund. Breakfast was extensive, bar was good but prices are bit high for China. Concierge was good in organizing a one day trip to a watertown, although the company used was a scam. Advertised more time there but brought us back earlier and skipped the visit to the silk factory. All in all a great hotel and would definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the Bund!!

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights at the end of National Week. The hotel is walking distance to The Bund, major shopping areas, and other sites. Rooms are very spacious with a room divider (plus large flat screen TV) that separates the sleeping area from the desk and couch areas. Large bath as well. We spent most of our days walking so came home several nights and "collapsed" on the Club Lounge for dinner and drinks. The assortment of food was one of the best we've seen in a Renaissance, both Western and Asian selections. (Terrific sushi!) The view from the Club Lounge is spectacular, looking across the river towards a million modern buildings. Staff were extremely helpful, but didn't always speak as much English as we needed, but would get assistance when necessary.

We stayed at this Renaissance last week. It was very interesting being right by the "old Shanghai" neighborhood with Yu Garden and shopping area within a stone's throw away. We had glorious weather throughout our stay and although my room (city view) had a dismal view of the city with a huge construction project starting up on the next block, the Bund view from the club lounge (we paid extra for the upgrade) was lovely! Beautiful view of the Yu Bazaar area, the river and the super high-rises on the Pudong side of the city.

The room was very clean and comfy. The only negative was the food overall was unimpressive. We ordered room service, ate breakfast and snacked in the club lounge. The room service we ordered from the Asian menu was bland and uninspired. The breakfast choices were nice but again, just ok.

I recommend not eating at the hotel as just outside, there's a lot of interesting options. Loved going to Din Tai Fung (the famous steamed dumpling restaurant) which is a mere 5-10 min walk from the hotel. We went there twice during our stay.

Stayed here twice in the last 3 months. The location is great and it is right next to a Metro Station and easy walking distance to the Bund. The staff are friendly and attentive and the rooms are modern and comfortable with everything to the expected Marriott standard. I did a few train trips from her to other towns and found the concierge staff excellent and efficient in organising tickets for me. Apart from a bad start to my first stay when I was given the key to a room which was already occupied (quite a shock when I opened the door !!), everything has been good and I shall make this my Shanghai base from now on.

Room Tip: The Executive Lounge is on 17th floor. There is a great view from the higher floors.

Our son lives in China and he encouraged us to try this hotel when we visited Shanghai. It has a good location and was a very good value. It is a new property by Yu Garden and the old part of town. Staff was helpful and we could walk safely to many spots we wanted to see. One slip up- when we arrived- we asked about a place to eat and were told everything was closed at 10 PM. We were told to try room service. We did and it was fine but there were restaurants on the Bund a few blocks away where we could have eaten. We hired a private tour guide and highly recommend her. You can reach Lisa at lisa_haiyun@hotmail.com to see what she offers.
