We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights in total during two weeks (between round-trips in China). Nice, well-equipped rooms. Clean. Comfortable beds. Easy access from Metro line 10, Yu Yuan Garden station, exit 4 (200-250 meters' walk). Extra pay for breakfast RMB 68,-. The staff at reception-desk understand and speak some English, though the information we got was not always correct. (We were informed that the Metro went 24 hours, but we realized that line 10 stopped at 22.25 hrs). It is one stop by metro to East Nanjing Road (corresponding with line 2 direct to Airport). Limited shopping possibilities around hotel. Can be recommended!

I spent a weekend in Shanghai during a business travel. The hotel is beatiful but a bit old. Rooms are clean but it seems to be in a good 3* european hotel rather than in a 4* hotel.
Price was a real bargain: 47€ + taxes / night for a double room.
The position is fantastic, 5min far from the old city and 2min by foot from the underground stop.
The staff can't speak English, except the personnel at the front desk.

...is the first listing on the hotel menu, and that really is a metaphor for this establishment: trying to provide international service but just not quite getting it.The rooms are mostly all right, clean with wood floors, a tv whose satellite channels tend to cut out, a small fridge, but without any particular character or extra space. The rooms facing the street are quite noisy so are not appropriate for light sleepers. The restaurant claims to offer Chinese and continental food but I never saw any evidence of the latter, though I could have missed it due to being distracted by the 5-minute spectacle of 2 foreign guests trying to mime 'ice' to 3 members of the wait staff and another foreigner trying to stop the waitress from pouring his Heineken into a glass with ice in it. The service is earnest and well-meaning but not smooth. Overall the hotel is fine, just be aware that you may have to have a bit of patience.

Perfect place to stay in Shanghai, near Yu Yuan Garden, 5 minutes from the metro station Yu Yuan, close to the Bund.
The rooms are large, redecorated, the bathroom has a tube on the corner with very nice views.
the check-in was fast, the employees very polity and they spoke English.
Highly recommended!

Ever searched for the highly-rated SSAW Hotel, Shanghai on Tripadvisor and found nothing??!! You can easily find it on other hotel booking sites but not here..why?!

Reason being it seems to be listed as this "Shanghai Centralstar Hotel" when it is in fact the "SSAW Hotel" (Mods, is it possible to update the listing name to help other travellers please - it's extremely confusing?!).

Anyway, don't be put off by below reviews which were clearly posted when the hotel was being renovated. That renovation is now complete and despite it's fairly non-descript exterior, internally it's had a facelift and is now stylishly designed with low lighting and dark smokey wooden floors.

We took a basic deluxe room, it wasn't huge but was comfortable with an LCD TV, FREE mini-bar!, great king-size bed (though the pillows weren't the best), good and clean bathroom and great heater (which is important in Chinese winter!).

The central location in Huangpu is fantastic, very central and easy to walk to Yuyuan Gardens and Old City (10 min), People Park (10-15 min), The Bund (15 mins) and the endless shopping street of Huaihua (2 mins). Xintiandi, French Concession and the maze of wonderful alleyways and shops at Tianzifang (a must visit) are all close by too (walk, bus or metro).

We didn't have breakfast here so can't judge that but would certainly consider coming back to this hotel considering its cost and location.
