“Great neighborhood, but had too issues to be a satisfied customer”
Reviewed August 27, 2010

The hotel desk was not exceptionally helpful when asked questions, for example they could not identify anything interesting in the area even though it's a fantastic neighborhood for tourists. We stayed at the "affiliated"/sister hotel; the hotel is split into two sections on either side of Donghu Road. It's a confusing arrangement; I've uploaded a helpful map to Tripadivisor. Our room size was conformable, and was clean, but the air conditioner was noticeably weak. Thankfully the a/c worked well enough to afford sleep. The positive & best part of this hotel is the neighborhood, called the French Concession, which includes exceptionally well preserved French Quarters. The nearby streets are quiet and tree-lined. For your reference, our room was booked as "Deluxe Standard Room (affiliated villa)(no-star)". The more historic section of this hotel, on the other side of Donghu Road, was under construction and not open (July 2010).

It's a nice hotel, looks good and the room is fine. No complaints there, but there is nothing special about this hotel other than a good location.

The hotel staff doesn't go the extra mile for guests and speaks hardly any english. Good to speak chinese. They seem a bit ignorant. Too bad. And it is cheaper and a lot tastier to have a breakfast at wagas across the street! Weird...

First and last time there, no recommandation what so ever.

I visited this hotel many times in the past 8 years and I would call it my home away from home in Shanghai. Depending in which part of the hotel (old/new) you are booking the rooms are either spacious or even big. The entire interior could maybe be a bit renovated, but if you are not looking for the perfectness of a 5star hotel you may like this dogy-style. Especially if you compare the price with other hotels in Shanghai.
Locationwise it strongly depends where you want to go in Shanghai or what you want to do. The location is quite and public transport is not far away. Taxi from Pudong takes 35 min. w/o traffic jam and costs arround 130RMB. The other airport is even closer.
Beds are very good, not this type of rock-hard chinese mattress.
The service is friendly and you will find a lot of nice restaurant/coffee shops etc. nearby.

This is my 4th stay at the Donghu Hotel. This trip I will be spending 3 week-ends at the facillity.

The Donghu has two different buildings - Building One which cost more since you get some amenities such as wash clothes, rope, internet is probably included in cost, minibar is nicer and rooms larger.

Building Number two has smaller rooms. I tried 2 rooms on the past Friday and just didn't like them. The first was odd shaped and did not have the number of outlets to plug in - phone, computer and light by desk. Bathroom and Bedroom very small.
The second room I tried was bigger but had too much furniture in it for the size room. It had desk, 2 chairs and table, two bed tables, Tv sat on part of console next to desk. Bathroom very small .

The room I am in now is 5th floor and has king size bed, two comfortable chairs and small table, desk, Console with TV on it which I can watch while on computer at desk, Nice minibar (Cost isn't bad - Coke cost 6 rmb and you can buy it in store for 3 rmb. )
What I like is the bathroom and robes which i use after a shower. Room cost is 820 rmb/night - week end rate along with company discount.

AC in both hotels cannot keep up with weather - it is problably 35 C and it gets warm in room about 26-28. They increased speed of fan for section but room has not cooled down since I was here - Thursday with AC running all time.

Shower - water temperature can be tricky. First night water too hot and next day too cold. I believe the mixing valve sticks sometimes so you have to play with hot and cold until it gets unstuck.

Fitness facility isn't world class - universal, 2 treadmills, 2 bikes and some barbells. Pool looks nice. Men's has Sauna and Steamroom but it is hit or miss if they are working. First day worked and neither worked yesterday.

Restaurants - breakfast is typical mix of Chinese and Western. Food is plentiful and good. I have not eaten any other meals here since there are plenty of restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk.

Location Xian Tin Di is approximately 30 minute walk or 10 minute taxi (12 rmb) Yu Yuan Gardens is 1 hr walk and 20 minute taxi. I spent 1 day walking from Donghu to Yu Yuan, then Dantai Antique area and finally Xian Tin Di for lunch and back to hotel.
Close to the Hotel you get the Watchy, Watchy, Baggy, Baggy and now Tshirt people. If you ignor them, they will let you alone and will even help you if you need to find street.

Staff is very good - can't say anything about their trying to help.

Overall - not the Hilton or Sheraton but if on Business trip or even touring, how much time do you really spend in the Hotel Room? Only wish - Better AC.

This hotel is perfectly situated, if you want to stay in the French concesssion. The rooms and facilities are excellent particularly considering the price. The hotel is relatively close to two subway stations has good shopping in the vicinity as well as excellent restaurants, cafes and bars. Not for those who prefer the ultramodern- this is more a taste of old Shanghai.

I booked a room at the annex building, thinking the room should be located in an annex building belonging to the Donghu Hotel compound, but it happens to be that the room was located in an independent modern ugly building, not even in the same block, but some meters away from the real Donghu hotel.
I felt really disappointed and cheated, about the information they give at the web page and pictures shown there wich let you belive your are going to be at charming hotel, when they really give you another place, without any of the services suposes to offer you.
Bad experience.

The location is perfect. It's in the center of the French Concession. Hadn't been to Shanghai before, and the location was a huge help. The concierge/front desk on the other hand wasn't. If you don't speak Chinese, you need people who do to write down names of places in Chinese for you (for taxi drivers). In Beijing and HK our concierge did this for us, and were always a huge help. But at the Donghu they seemed annoyed to offer help/advice and translation. They sent us on a wild goose chase looking for a restaurant, 45 min in the wrong direction. The rooms are ok, hard beds, carpet which looks clean but doesn't feel clean. Bathrooms are not nice either.

My wife stayed in Shanghai for 6 days after I left but switched to a B&B down the street also in the French Concession. It's called KE TANG JIAN HOTEL. Cheaper, way nicer rooms, wood floors not dirty carpet, more elegant all the way around. It feels like a 5 star. Definitely recommend staying here instead if there is availability.
