This was the first hotel we encountered in China. It was supposed to be a 4*, but I would say more a 3*. It is located near the main train station, with no river in sight - just a construction site opposite.

It has a very exponsive bar (small Tsingtao RMB 32!!!!) but the cheapest, and one of the best, hotel restaurants we went to. We had dim sum, noodles and two large Tsingtao beers (RMB 12 each ) for RMB 90. Bargain. Portion sizes so generous, we could not finish the noodles.

One word of caution - do not expect to get a taxi here quickly on a Friday night. The poor bellboy spent ages running up and down the road trying to get one for us. The staf in the hotel generally were very good and spoke English in many cases. There is also a cash machine in the lobby, where we cheaply got cash using our German bank debit cards.

Fine as atour hotel, but not too keen on the location.

common areas and rooms need a renovation. common The carpet is stained and the wall was patched. sheets and towels were clean. in the first room in which we have been there was a strong smell of disinfectant.
except two employees who have really helped us, the rest of the staff has very little knowledge of English.

On check-in we were told there was no non-smoking rooms available, and there was also no king, or queen bedded rooms (both details which had been confirmed in writing by the travel agent) After a stoic stance by self, the duty manager appeared and moved us to a "suite" ( from which the ashtrays were hastily removed :-}) The room was spacious, with a superb bathroom, and it overlooked the main street and the river. Except that in the last 10 or so years so many taller buildings have been built that there's no way at all you'll ever see the river. And even if you could , it's just a tributary not the main river. Despite it being touted as "a few minutes" from the Bund and Nanjing Street; it was 15 minutes by taxi to either the Bund or the Nanjing Street shopping area. Staff were very helpful, apart from check-in experience, and better English than most hotels we experienced in China.

  • Liked — Upgraded room, excellent big bathroom
  • Disliked — Miles away from where we wanted to be

Decent location, clean hotel. But there is better. We had some difficulty communicating in English with most of the staff, and the beds are very, very firm. Also the hotel has busy, private party rooms on the second floor open to the lobby which are mostly used by locals, the noise from the comings and goings was very loud and many of them hung around in the lobby continuing their festivities...everynight.

  • Liked — clean hotel
  • Disliked — lobby too loud

We stayed at the Golden Riverview hotel for six nights in September. The hotel is quite nice as it is only about a year old. We booked our hotel through a tour package, so I can't comment on how reasonable the price is. The hotel is about an hour away from Pudong airport. The lobby and rooms are quite nice and spotlessly clean. We had a room with two double beds and it was a generous size, including a desk and two armchairs and a small table. The bathroom was an average size. No problems with housekeeping: towels and bedsheets were changed daily. Amenities, including toothbrushes, were replenished daily. There was a mini bar in the room, which we used to keep water and beverages cold that we purchased outside. The only complaint that I had was that the location was a bit sketchy. It's about a 10 minute walk to a main street with a department store and restaurants, but the actual street that the hotel is on is run down and old. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around after dark in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Taxis are plentiful and quite cheap. It took about 15 min to get to the Shanghai museum, Jin Mao Building, and Yu Yuan Garden and costs approx 20 RMB. If I were to return to Shanghai, I would probably stay in another location, however I didn't have any problems with this hotel itself, other than the neighbourhood.

  • Liked — Rooms were very new and clean
  • Disliked — Location, lack of English TV channels (only CNN/HBO, but to be expected in China)
