The Longemont Shanghai
Ranked #97 of 5,112 Hotels in Shanghai
Reviewed December 15, 2012

Stayed here at the start of our trip to China , Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong-- what a spectacular start, modern 5 star we were on the 47th floor of a 58storey hotel--- the gym and pool on the 28th floor was superb. Just take a look at the hotels website to get an idea of the rooms just amazing--Bath with a view over the city !! The attention to detail was faultless I cannot imagine anyone having a negative comment to make-- unless of course you look out of the windows----- the smog in the city is so bad that the view is severely limited -- not the fault of the hotel in any way of course, I had just failed to realise how much a problem the pollution was there.
An excellent choice of location as we had a friend coming to see us and everyone ( ok most people) know the location of this hotel so very good for meetings. I guess it is one of The places to be seen in Shanghai-- which in such a spectacular city is quite an acolade. Certainly one of my all time memories.

Room Tip: Maybe the view is better at around the 30th floor, below the cloud /smog level

This hotel is very good value for money. The rooms are of a high standard, and the service is good. The restaurants are all of a good standard, and the Royal China is worthy of recommendation on the basis of having the crispest spring rolls I have ever tasted! The hotel is well situated on the Yan'an Road, with easy access to most central locations - depending on the Shanghai traffic of course...

Nice hotel, great breakfasts, rooms very nice. Also, we had some pretty good pizza at the Italian restaurant. The service was super, except one morning for breakfast, we had to pour our own coffee. All the rooms are on high stories. We were on the 41st floor, which had wonderful views of the city.

My wife is currently staying at the Longemont in Shanghai. we are in contact daily using Apple's FaceTime on our Macs. This hotel would rate a 3+ or 4 rating if it weren't for the daily dose of sewer gas that fills her room at night when she tries to sleep.

We've stayed in a number of hotels throughout China, and the smell of sewer gas coming out of the bathroom drains is pretty common. It is a terrible smell and in her case at the Longemont, it is very upsetting and disgusting. It gives her headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Look up "sewer gas" on Google and you will find it is very noxious and even toxic. Her symptoms are classic for exposure to it.

She has to call someone at the front desk (who doesn't understand English well enough to help solve the problem) and have them come up and check it out. Then they contact the hotel engineer who comes up and "closes the valve". Apparently there is a sewer vent valve that automatically opens/closes late at night. When this happens, the gas backfills through the drains and fills the room with the stench. China has not embraced the use of p-traps that use a plug of water in a u-tube in every drain to stop the gas.

This is a 5-star hotel, highly rated. What is with this place that it doesn't have proper plumbing and ventilation? I think she should get her money back or have them repair it.

The hotel manager offered to move her. Consider her position: 1) she's on a business trip, works all day, prepares for the next day until bedtime, and tries to get some sleep. 2) She's there for 3 weeks, has a professional wardrobe that requires hanging up as soon as she arrives; so she has emptied her carefully packed suitcase and moved into the room. 3) This happens at night as she is getting ready to sleep or is asleep and is awakened by the bad smell. If she were to pack up and move, it would take her two-3 hours, literally, at a time when she should be sleeping, is already exhausted, with no guarantee that the whole problem wouldn't be repeated in the next room.

Avoid the Longemont. The Chinese hotel industry does not understand service, nor, apparently building construction, design and basic plumbing and health issues.

And the walls are very thin. She can hear a person in the next room snuffling all night and wheezing (maybe suffering from sewer gas, too?)

Among the hotels I've stayed in, the Longemont is not the best . Still, the overall quality is very good. Beds are wide and confortable, as are rooms. One problem is that you can hear very well when your neighbor uses the toilet flush... There are few other details showing that the hotel is aging . Nonetheless, the price was very good for such an hotel (4 stars ?) , I can therefore recommend it.

We arrived at the Longemont because we mistakenly booked a room at a much lower quality hotel on the same street, and when we found The Longemont nearby, we were elated. They had rooms available, even on a high floor, and we checked in immediately. The bed was probably the best thing, extremely comfortable and very nice quality bedding. The room overall was spacious and comfortable for two. We went to the Italian restaurant the first night and it was OK. The food kind of tasted like it had been cooked in China, it had a similar taste to if you were to order Chinese noodles so that I was not very pleased with. The next night we ordered dinner through room service, and we were much happier with our meal that night. Each morning we had breakfast at the lounge and they had a buffet style assortment of fruits and other breakfast pastries, and they even had a chef making omelets on the spot.

I would have to say our stay was very comfortable and much more in line with what we expected when we came to Shanghai. The only downside is it is a bit far off from the more touristy areas (People's Square, Nanjing Road, Xintiandi/French Concession) but taxis are very inexpensive so it was never a problem venturing over that way.
