Xingyu Oriental Bund Hotel

This hotel is difficult to find but the entrance is just around the corner from Renmin Road in Yong'an Road. The Reception is located on the 8th floor with rooms above this. Not many reception staff speak english but we got by and they were helpful. Great location just across the road from the entrance to the Yuyang Gardens area and easy walk to the Bund. The room was spacious and quiet without any road noise or other guests. However, the beds are like rocks. The bathroom is small but adequate. A 500CNY charge to our credit card for the mini bar when we checked in. You also need to request a power plug adapter as they have different pin points.
We ate in the "International" restaurant and the service was non existent. Staff in the restaurant speak little or no english and usually ignore you unless you get their attention. Its messy and at times dirty with food on tables and the floor. Seating is wherever you like and sometimes you can lose you table if you go to the buffet breakfast together. The staff clear the plates only when you leave and they sometimes reset the tables but you have to get your own tea and coffee with limited milk available. Food was just ok and it was the same buffet breakfast every day.
The accommodation was cheap for the location and is was safe and clean. Good value for limited spend.

The hotel is located near the Old town gate entrance and the Bund river promenade as well as 10 minute walk from a subway station (line 10). So it is very easy to visit the main spot points in town. Our room was correct both in terms of space and cleanness; breakfast was rich in choices even if more Chinese oriented than western oriented. The lobby is at 8th floor and rooms from 9th to 14th.

The best thing about my stay here was the room - perfect size, clean, comfortable, and I had a view of the Bund/Pudong at night. The furniture seemed relatively new, but any "off-gassing" by cheap furniture was complete. Carpet starting to show some wear, but still OK at this point. The location is a compromise - walking distance to Yuyuan Garden and all of the restaurants and shopping there, also one end of the Bund. That's basically all that exists now for Shanghai historical sites. Front door is on a difficult-to-access street that can make cabs difficult to find, sometimes have to walk to nearest corner and flag one. If during hot summer, not an attractive option.

Staff was a slight problem - nice and work hard by old-school China standards. I'm not a stickler for dress and demeanor, but it would be nice if a few more were fluent in English. I know that raises the costs quite a bit, and the value/money is a key reason to stay here.

We had nice rooms overlooking the bund, which looked beautiful at night with all the lights. The hotel has a nice local feel to it. And is right at the bund and soo close to teh yuyuan garden, and shopping. The food is good, but the restaurant staff hardly understands much english.

We got a great deal and I think we got excellent value for money. Big nice room with a plethora of amenities and included extras. Excellent location. Nice big chinese breakfast with delicus dumplings. The free internet and wide asortment of englich tv channels another plus.

However. The service at the hotel was horrific. We stayed one week and not once did any staff member smile at us. The englich skills of the receptionists where poor and they clearly demonstarted that they had better things to do then to help us. Also there was a few minor details in the room that should have been more promtly fixed.

The beds in the room where so hard that at first we thought it was a joke.

over all I would say that this is a good hotel and I do recomend you to stay there. If the hotel focused more on service and details this hotel could be great.

Room Tip: ask for a room with soft beds.

I stayed at this hotel last year during a short trip to Shanghai. All I could remember is the very very hard bed. I thought I was sleeping on a piece of plank wood or something. Other than that, the room is clean and quite spacious. The hotel is conveniently located near to metro station and within walking distance to tourist attractions such as The Bund and Yuyuan for shopping and sightseeing. Need to go down to lobby for wifi access. I would stay at other hotels if I ever visit Shanghai again.

The rooms were amazing, the view of the Bund was spectacular, breakfast was delicious...they offered a wide variety, but the staff was hit or miss on service. Mainly it was due to the lack of English speaking employees. I had dinner one night at the restuaurant, and it was really good, I had the bbq platter (goose, duck, pork, and chicken). Wifi was only available in the lobby, but each room had access to LAN.
