Xingyu Oriental Bund Hotel
Ranked #622 of 5,112 Hotels in Shanghai

For well under $100., this place had it all, from the location to the fuzzy bathrobe and slippers, great rooms. Taxi drivers, however, just looked at us when we gave the name, because the Chinese name has nothing to do with the English one, and it seems to be called by two different English ones. The entrance doesn't actually face Renmin Road, and the map on the website is about 6 blocks off (not the first time a Google map has led us astray). The hotel is actually in a great location: about 1 block from the Bund and the river cruise docks, about 2 blocks from the famous Yu Garden and zigzag bridge shopping area, 3 blocks from the subway, 1/2 block from a Big Bus (double-decker tour) stop. Older hotel on the outside, nice inside. Lobby on the 8th floor, nice restaurant and bar facilities (we chose to eat at the smaller stands and restaurants in the Yu Garden area--don't miss the famous dumplings and the Kobayashi Cookie Company's hot fresh filled cookies). However, and this is a big however, something seems to be going on with this hotel. The beautiful, big bar was almost always empty, the enormous dining room not crowded, the lobby almost always empty. When we arrived, they seemed startled down at the entrance on the first floor, and a couple of managers scurried up and down and around while we waited about 10 minutes until escorted upstairs. Our Chinese friends got some inside information that the hotel had been sold and the new owners hadn't decided what to do with it--which in Shanghai probably means it'll be torn down soon and replaced with some fabulous new office building, which would be a shame, given the location for travelers. The rooms were well taken care of, but the staff as well as the number of guests seemed to be minimal, as did the English-speaking ability of the staff. We'd stay here again in a minute if we could be sure that after booking, the hotel would actually exist at the time of our visit.

I have returned to this hotel for a business trip one year later and I would certainly recommend this hotel for its great value, location and decent rooms. The one problem last year was the internet was really slow so I could barely work which was a real problem, however this year the internet in the room was very fast and greatly improved. I think it would be difficult to get better value for such quality rooms, location and the food is really good too for breakfast and dinner. Of course, do not expect the same service as a place like the Waldorf Astoria, however the staff were very all helpful and pleasant.

When you arrive at this hotel, don't expect to find the normal lobby on the ground floor. Reception is actually on the eighth floor and other than one of the admin staff, non spoke good English. I accept this as my problem because I do not speak Mandarin. That said, arriving in the middle of a blizzard to find an empty foyer was a bit challenging until we worked our where the lift and reception was.

Not so easy to find this hotel at the first time because no sign ORIENTAL BUND. Only XINYU ... Hotel. But in the end I know its the same hotel. The receptionist located at 8th floor. The Room is very clean and nice eventhough the hotel appearance looks old. and the room space is huge for both of us. Free Wifi at the hotel lobby. About the hotel location, from Yuyuan Metro Station around 10 min walk. Yuyuan Garden is the opposite of the hotel. To the Bund (near cruse station) only 10 min walk also.

Me and my family (the 3 of us, adults) were there from Jan 23 - 28, 2013. After reading about it on TripAdvisor and comparing it with others, decided to book this hotel and I am so glad that I did.

We arrived at the hotel pretty early - 8ish in the morning. (Do note that the Reception is on the 8th Floor). Thank goodness the room was available (we got 1329) and no additional charge was needed. But they do ask you to pay RMB 200 as a deposit of which you will be refunded when you check-out. Do keep the receipt. As ours only came with 2 breakfasts, for the 3rd person, you will have to pay RMB 88 each time.

It is true that the staffs at the Reception speak very, very little English and sometimes that might make you feel that they're unfriendly. So, please try to not take any offense on that.

Our room was decently big with 1 king and 1 almost queen size bed in it, together with a sofa and another 1 seater. The bathroom was good too - they have a bath and shower.

The location is really awesome coz it's just less than 5 minutes walk to The Bund and YuYuan Garden (2 of the must-see places in Shanghai). Although the hotel's main door is not on the main road per se, it's NOT at some badly lit or dingy side street either. AND, the YuYuan Garden Metro station was only about 10 - 12 mins walk from the hotel. Just nearby the hotel, there's a clothing supplier place where vendors sell lace, buttons, threads by the roadside as well. So, it's nice to see people going about their daily activities and life. Nothing to be afraid of at all.

Another thing is, since The Bund is almost like right behind the hotel, while walking on The Bund, taking photos and enjoying everything around, you will eventually reach Nanjing Road too! That would take about 45mins to an hour. Depending on how fast you walk, without stopping to take photos :)

Give this hotel a go like we did, and I hope you have a lovely time like us :)

The hotel was located relatively near to the Yuyuan. As I stepped outside the hotel, I felt abit insecure. On the streets, there were vendors of all sort. Ranging from lace vendors, cloth vendors, fruit and meat skewer vendors, you name it. On my third day of arrival, I moved to another hotel at the french concession. The comfortable clean room is really worth mentioning, much above par. Breakfast was average. Service, nothing to shout about.

The location is great, everything is close to the Hotel. You are 5 min. from the Bund and 2 min. from the Old Town and old markets. The breakfast is good, although many meals were cold. The room is big and well equiped, but the heater needed 2 hours to heat the room up in winter. I would stay here again.
