“Tired, worn out and gross bathroom.”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

I recently stayed at the Bund while on a tour of China. I stayed here 2 nights and that was enough. Although the hotel is in a good location and the room large, the bathroom was definately not pretty. It was huge but the mould in the shower stall was disgusting. It was so bad that I actually wore my slippers in there. Once i saw the nice large room even with the stains on the furniture and the blistering of the paint thought it would be ok but the bathroom turned me off. I did ask for another room but the front desk people didn't really understand my wanting to move so that never happened.

For the price I paid for The Bund Hotel, I was very pleasantly surprised. It has a 1920s style glamour in its decor with a lot of dark wood and gold banisters, and the room was a very good size with a huge bathroom. It's not in absolute tip top condition - the edges are getting a little frayed here and there, and a skyscraper is going up behind it so there was building work taking place from early in the morning, but overall I was impressed at the quality I got for the rate.

There were two downsides for me, which would mean I would probably not stay here again, and they were the beds being very hard and therefore quite uncomfortable, and its location down back streets away from the main tourist hubs of People's Square and The Bund. It's only a ten minute or so walk from both of these areas, but because the roads around it aren't the main tourist throughfairs it can be quite quiet and in some places a bit rough-looking and badly lit, which meant that as a lone woman walking back in the evening I wasn't entirely comfortable - though saying that I was never bothered in any way.

If you're looking for a bargin place to stay in Shanghai this is a very reasonable place to consider, but it didn't stand out so much that I would particularly choose to stay there again.

Room Tip: There is a skyscaper being built at the back of the hotel, so maybe one to the front would be better...

Stayed at the Bund Hotel April 22-24, 2013 after staying at the SunWorld in Beijing. The Bund was very nice - surprisingly up-scale. It reminded me of a good Marriott business hotel in the USA. The hotel's breakfast buffet was very nice with a large selection of mostly western items.

The hotel is convenient to the Nanjing Road shopping street. If you stay at the Bund do eat across the street at the "Harvest Festival" restaurant. It is a little up-scale but delicious and gracious.

The only negative was the WiFi - it was not available in my room - only in the lobby and the executive floor. However, there was an Ethernet port that I could have used if had had hardware that could have used it.

Room Tip: Get a room just below the executive floor and you'll get their WiFi.

The location is good for Nanjing Road and the old neighbourhood surrounding the hotel is interesting although there is construction right next door so do get a room on an upper floor to avoid the noise. We tried to get a corner room as per a Tripadvisor tip but were not able to in spite of booking months in advance. Our room on the 16th (nonsmoking) floor was spacious and very pleasant. At check-in they wanted 300 RMB times the 6 nights of our stay (1,800 RMB) as a deposit but we refused and they accepted 300 RMB cash for the deposit. It is better to pay cash for the deposit than having your credit card debited and then credited as you will lose money on this transaction due to buy/sell bank exchange rates. Breakfast is good in a nice bright room.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 15th or 16th floors are nonsmoking and quieter.

we vistited shanghai in march 2013 and stayed for one week at the bund hotel. it is a nice hotel at good 3star european level. the hotel is well located in shanghai centre to explore the city. everything you need is in walking distance (starbucks, little stores, etc). the hotel offers great value for money. good standard rooms. service is good as well. i would recommend this hotel.

Generally pleased with this place with comfortable room, bar, wifi in the lobby. It's only a 10 min walk to Nanjing Road so great for shopping and coffee and also a short walk to the Bund itself. So plenty to do in easy walking distance and all round good place if you get a good internet deal

We had 2 nights here at the end of our whirlwind tour of China. It served its purpose well. We found it to be clean and very well appointed in the room we had. The staff was friendly although some of them really struggled with English. (I didn't learn any Chinese so it's not their fault) There is free wi-fi but only in the bar and the hotel lobby - both of which have different log ins. The lobby wi-fi you can access from the breakfast room if you sit close to the balustrade.
I do not suggest eating in either of the 2 restaurants there as they were both pretty awful. We walked in to the Russian restaurant, sat down, looked long and hard at the menu and the food that was being served then promptly walked out again. The Chinese restaurant was completely empty apart from our tabel of 4 and there were some very funny/strange literal translations of the food. We did eat there but only because we were so hungry.
Overall we would stay there again. The location is perfect - so central.

Room Tip: We were up on a very high floor.
