We almost skipped this, but our guide suggested we just go for a short visit to learn about the history of silk and how it is harvested. We found this very interesting and being from Texas, we really had no use for silk comforters - but the prices seemed reasonable. We declined to go further into the retail part of the store since we did not plan on making a purchase.

Worth a stop for these prices you wont find it any cheaper. Was worth our trip and lucky that our tour went here as well. Great quality and very reasonable prices.

A very quick explanation of the silk making process. Then it was onto the selling part of the tour - we were not interested in purchasing anything but just happy to admire the beautiful quilts, pillow cases etc.

Like so many other experiences in China - jade, pearls, art museums - the Silk Museum is a bit museum and history and lot retail. The quilts and pillows are very reasonably priced. While the duvets and sham covers are not inexpensive, they are much cheaper than the comparable items in the US, plus they have a range of costs depending on the quality. On the upper level is a retail store selling various silk items of clothing and silk carpets. I thought the custom tailoring was of only mediocre quality, though the fabrics seemed first class. There was a range of silk carpets which one could bargain for. It would require someone with knowledge of silk carpets to know whether they were paying a fair price or not. In China and many other places one simply has to ignore the pushy sales persons. It goes with the territory.

Visited China in 2009 and now an expat in 2012. This place is good for the curious about silk production in China. I visited the one in Suzhou in 2009 and I will say that one is better than this one. Regardless, if you are in Shanghai and cannot make it out to Suzhou the spiel is the same just not as big. The store prices are all the same and much cheaper than what you would get in the West. The silk comforters are a great buy, the duvets are a different story - they are a bit on the pricey side. If you just want a comforter you can always get a cotton duvet and save yourself some money. Overall it is a pleasant experience and you can feel confident that you are getting real silk and not polyester made to feel like silk. You can try bargaining but you probably will not get very far but they will throw in some cheap scarves to appease your bargaining savvy.
