“Great location BAD service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

Great location as near the Metro and Nanjinglu Shopping center. But the staff needs to be trained in simple courtesy and basic English. They are rude and they seem not to understand English when we are asking for directions. Simple directions like, "How do we get to Shanghai Expo?" Blank stare. A simple, I am sorry would have made things acceptable. But by ignoring us and pretending we do not exist is not only rude but unacceptable in any decent hotel.

travelling for business,
location is incredibily convenient : 5 min walk either to Nanjing rd., bund walk or people square
I had a superior room with spectacular bund view
Breakfast room is as well spectacular, while breakfast food is nothing exiting

Clean and nice forniture, old style but new construction
Price absolutely reasonable for all good things above.

Room Tip: superior room, with small additional charge you get fantastic bund view

Old chinese hotel in an excellent location with the worst breakfast I've ever had.

The rooms are actually quite good although a bit dated, there's a separate seating area and desk even in standard rooms, large bathroom and the location of the hotel is fantastic, just a few minutes walk from the Bund, Nanjing Road, M1NT, Bar Rouge and just around the corner from the West-In which was a life saver.
That's because no one at the Salvo speaks English - it's easier to walk to the West-in to get all your questions answered. And log in to their free wifi while you're at it cause believe it or not, there's no such luxury at the Salvo!

Nevertheless most of the staff tried their best though, especially the housekeepers which found it really hard to understand the term "dry-cleaning" no matter what sort of sign language I tried. I eventually gave up before a smiling Chinese housekeeper knocked on my door 2 minutes later with an ironing board and started ironing in the room. She ended up ironing 4 of my shirts and refused to take any money for it! Wonderful!

Overall I'd say it's good value for money but nothing special - location is everything here.

Beware of the shifty chinese guys out the front of the hotel.

We booked this after reading reviews on Tripadvisor and because it matched our criteria for location (near the Bund and People's Square) and price. We had a twin business executive suite on the 13th floor with city views (river views are apparently not available for any twin rooms). The room was nicely furnished in a traditional style with a slightly pointless living area (would have preferred a larger bedroom area) and two old-school TVs. It could do with a refurb, but is in reasonable nick. The bathroom contained a very odd shower arrangement with a large corner bathtub. The shower pressure was terrible and the hotel couldn't fix it. The beds were comfortable and the room was kept pretty clean during our stay. It was generally quiet in the hotel, although the walls seem very thin and we could hear next door's conversations late into the night!

Breakfast in the high-up restaurant was a mash-up of Western and Chinese, and we took full advantage of quite good dim sum alongside oily eggs. The food was edible but not spectacular. There was a reasonable selection of fruit too, and the staff were quite friendly and quick to offer coffee and tea.

Location is excellent, being about 10 mins' walk to the Bund and People's Square or East Nanjing Road metro stations from where you can get almost anywhere in the city. Taxis are also readily available from the front of the hotel. The streets around the hotel are fairly authentic so if you want an experience of street life it's fun to wander around and soak up the atmosphere (just pay close attention all around you when crossing the roads, even on a pedestrian crossing!)

There's no wifi in the rooms, but take a laptop or an Apple Airport to get your own wifi from the wired LAN internet in the room.

A major caveat - avoid the leisure floor! We wandered in fairly late one night to check out the games room (and maybe learn to play Mahjong) but were greeted by an offer of body massage and a girl in a very short skirt! It was pretty clear what was going on there and we beat a hasty retreat. It's a seedy side to what seems like a decent business hotel otherwise.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and a river view (not available for twin rooms so they say).

this hotel is located well in shanghai touristy area. the Nanjing pedestrian market is 5 minutes walk away.the bund is also the same.the people`s square is also nearby and walkable.but the old quarters, opposite and around the hotel gives an uncomfortable feeling,as if one is staying in shanghai of 50 years ago.the open display of meat shops nearby is unsettling. but for ethnic value,if you love it, then it is o.k.some good local food is available here.all around ,there are 7/11 like stores, some open for 24 hrs.
the breakfast was adequate, if not very good.the restaurant has a good view.
the check-in for business suite was at 31st floor.then we were sent back to lower floor room.they can very well do this at the ground floor reception it self !!one will be saved the trouble of carrying the luggage around.
the room is of grand Chinese decor.the business suite has one drawing room and one bedroom.the bathroom, even though clean looks its age.
this hotel is not exactly value for money, but manages to be a nice place overall.

Room Tip: business executive rooms cost more, but starts at higher floors with good view.all rooms are calm and...

Stayed there for three nights. Takes a 5 minutes walk from East Nanjing Rd metro station to the hotel. Local vendors in the vincinity. Another 5 minutes walk to the Bund.
Great views if you have the business executive rooms, better value is to take the 5 minutes walk, though.
Breakfast has lots of room to improve, especially when you are at a business trip, since they open 6.30.

We stayed 11 nights on the 26th floor and never got tired of the view on the Bund and over Shanghai . Serene sunrise by the Jin Mao tower ,boats cruising on the river, futuristic buildings on the Pudong side of the city without forgetting the busy traffic on the roads below . The Hotel has a perfect location-easy walk to the Bund, Nanjing Lu and even a healthy walk to the Yu garden. The executive suite was very comfortable , Spacious , Clean and reasonably priced. Wide choice of food for breakfast on the 31st floor with more spectacular view on the city. The staff is helpful including the concierge accompanying me to the chemist to get medication for my husband who had a bout of " Delhi Belly " !!!! It was a shame that the bar in the lobby was under renovation .
The chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor has a decent selection of dishes but what I appreciated the most was that the staff did their best to get the Chef to make dishes for me as I do not eat beef and Pork. They cooked dishes that was not on the menu and all was done with a smile. They even offered to cook vegeterian meals for me !!
The other strong point is the coffee lounge on the top floor. This service is available for free if you are in an executive suite as from 9.00a.m till 6.00 p.m. Beer, soft drinks, pastry and fruits are available and is a good place to wait for your transport to the airport once you have checked out from your room.

Room Tip: Go for a suite as you have a living room with another TV and more space . always take the room with...
