This is one of the must-do tourist stops. The district is full of authentic Chinese merchandise and the ambiance is what you would expect in old world China except for the modern amenities like McDonalds and other chain restaurants on the outskirts of town. However all my kids wanted was a Buddha statue and a plush dragon toy and for the life of me I couldn't find one in the entire market.

The Old Town is now filled up with touristy shops and guys chasing you down to buy fake designer handbags. That said, it is still a great place to see the old Chinese architecture, Chinese New Year festivities and AWESOME street food! Dumplings, meat-on--stick, tempura veggies, soups----an entire food court of Dim Sum priced perfect for travelers on a tight budget. we were cautioned by the hotel concierge that most of the jewelry looks beautiful, but is not genuine and definitely overpriced. My suggestion is to go there at night& take LOTS of pictures and go with a heart appetite!

Not the historic China they'd like you to believe, but mostly a center for tourists and souvenir shops. If you don't mind the odd Starbucks or McDonald's in a building resembling a Chinese palace, you'll like this area, as it offers some genuine experiences, such as the City God temple.

It is an old corner of modern city Shanghai. It maintains the original Shanghai style architecture and cross lanes. U can see a different Shanghai there. The city, the people live in and the life style they have will totally make u remember the old days in Shanghai.

Take some time to wander here - it's colourful and bustling. See the mid lake tea pavilion and visit the dumpling shop - we didn't but lots do - you can spot it by the queue!
