“Charming at Charms”

Centrally located, cheap hotel in central Shanghai. Close to infamous Nanjing Road, Shanghai Museum and other attractions. Rooms were small but clean and comfortable. all amenities provided, free internet worked perfectly. Room service meal was very average but there are plenty of dining options close by so this can be avoided. Good selection for breakfast which was included in the rate. Check-in and check-out were both efficient. Asked for a quiet room and received the same. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would stay here again.

As the title suggests, you are pretty much paying for the location and nothing much else. It's a stone's throw away from Renmin Square (where the exhibition centre for urban planning is), right next to Nanjing shopping street and about 15mins away from the Bund.

The rooms couldn't be described as spacious but if you are willing to pay for a slightly bigger room, then this might work for you. The bed was definitely too hard, so if you are not made tough, then you might just want to reconsider.

Buffet breakfast is average, you can get your fill if you are ok with Asian fare (e.g. porridge and some bread).

All in all, I would only recommend this hotel if you are after a centrally-located hotel with no frills.

Room Tip: You should request for a higher floor and one with windows facing Nanjing Road. You might just be ab...

The hotel is literally a few steps from the nanjing pedestrian street which i think is the best feature of this hotel. that said, it is so far from pudong airport as everything is if you want to stay where all the action is. by taxi, it will cost you and we travelled late evening. we arrived past midnight and it took awhile to check in because they really checked in each and every guest in our group so this is a warning to big groups - get ready to wait. Our rooms had a view of the interior of the hotel but that didn't bother us. the room is cozy for two with a bed with a firm mattress. extras in the room included foot pads, toiletry kits and even underwear. all come with a price tag of course. our rooms (we booked 3), all had a microwave, water heater and small fridge. the tv had cable but we only found 2 english channels - channel 40 something - cctv news and channel 73 - bloomberg. charms doesn't seem to be a cnn partner hotel. we didn't bring a laptop but it was only an itouch that was able to get wi-fi signal. our ipads couldn't get the signal unfortunately. now we come to the bathrooms. it was well lit with good exhaust. it had hot and cold water but you have to wait for the hot water to flow. one comment i have is that there isn't a rack to put your toiletries in the shower area. we were able to use the gym facilities. there were four treadmills and weight machines though some were not working in a space that took up about 3 hotel rooms. having only 1 breakfast per room, we had to find breakfast elsewhere and this was not hard to do since there are 2 24 hour convenience stores located behind the hotel and a small shop selling hot buns for breakfast right outside the back entrance of the hotel. oh, and there's a starbucks right across the front entrance of the hotel.:) according to my family members who ate breakfast, it was standard - bacon and eggs and not much to choose from but it was ok.

As a foreigner living in China, I often use "Chinese" style hotels because of price and convenience. I had to spend one night in Shanghai and be close to Nanjing East Road, and chose this hotel because of its location. I paid only the equivalent of $US70, and because of its location only one street back from Nanjing Road and 2 minutes walk away from the Sofitel and Howard Johnson hotels it suited the purpose. I didn't get many of the situations other reviewers got. Check in was painless, the room was dull and plain but everything worked OK and it was well equipped as mentioned in other reviews. The bed is as usual for this type of hotel hard but still not too uncomfortable. I asked for non smoking and the room did not reek of smoke which was a pleasant surprise. I didn't sample breakfast as with these style of hotels it can be an "acquired" taste, Instead planning to go to the Starbucks across the street. BUT - its inside an actual store, so doesn't open until 10am which ruined that plan.
The biggest negative with the Charms hotel is, after 10pm upon immediately stepping outside the hotel at night you will be swamped by men offering you "mister - you want massage, you want girl? etc" I also noticed some "girls" loitering across the street and the backside of the hotel as well. I was offered hashish also at 9am the next morning as well. The hotel has no control over this as these "people" operate outside it, but it's very off-putting. Having said that, I met with friends staying at the 5 star Sofitel nearby and they get swapped by people want to sell "bag!, watch!" every time they left the hotel. As someone who has travelled to Shanghai constantly over the last 10 years, it sadly seems to be sliding uncontrollably into "sleazy" territory. These people seem to operate with out any policing. Then add the increasing amount of beggars that hassle you at every opportunity really does make it unpleasant.
The Charms hotel I would only recommend to experienced travellers who really just need somewhere with a great location and really don't plan to spend much time in the actual hotel. And only if you get a very good price for it. Its certainly not for first time visitors to Shanghai.
It certainly is in an excellent location so you will need to weigh up the positives and negatives to decide.

The washroom smells so bad and the people working there a not very helpful. Their English is very limiting. The size of the room was okay, but the smell was so unbearable. Also it's loud at night and the walls are paper thin. The location is good, but the hotel is so run down and filled with pimps. Smells like rotten eggs in the washroom. I'm suppose to stay for 3 months but planning on cutting the trip short purely on how horrible this hotel is and the lack of help I've been getting to make my stay better. It's a shady hotel and I suggest finding other places to stay

Room Tip: Don't choose this hotel unless you can stand the disgusting smells. Bring a translator.

The rooms smell horrendous. The first day the drainage water came back up through the drainage hole in the bathroom floor. There were bugs in the room. It was also apparent that brothel type actvities were going on. And I constantly witnessed guests having to deal with various misunderstandings (at best) with the staff. Deposits being kept, laundry being lost, accusations of keys being kept, and charges for the condoms and panties that weren't used, but were hidden from the children. This was one of my worst experiences ever in a hotel and I'm pretty flexilble.

Price is really OK.
Location is so perfect. Close to subway, starbucks, seven eleven n sighseeing bus (hop on-hop off) right at the front of the lobby.

Speak English only a little, but it's working enough for us.

The room is nice, with good amenities (microwave).

I might go back there again for my next trip.

Room Tip: Not sure about that. But my room was OK, we were at the 6th floor.
