“Good Location Terrible Staff”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

We got back to the hotel about 9 o'clock one evening and wanted a cup of coffee, the hotel has a bar with great views of Pudong so we thought we'd go in there and see the lights while we had our drink, the bar wasn't busy but the waitress seats us up the corner looking away from the view! Having been put off by that plus the rather grim atmosphere in the bar we decided to leave and try the 1st floor 24 hour coffee shop which also has great views, as we walked into the coffee shop the two 'greeters' were on their mobiles, both rolled their eyes at our approach and when one of them finished their call we said we wanted some coffee only to be told 'No no no, no coffee here!' we were then directed to the bar in the lobby area and on arrival there were told they were shutting so no coffee!
How can it be beyond a 4 star hotel to provide two cups of coffee at 9pm?!
It's a real shame as the hotel is very good, great location next to the Bund and less than a ten minute walk from a metro stop. our room was also lovely.
The staff though have no interest in the guests and just view them as an annoyance who disturb them from texting or chatting.

We were enjoying The Bund at night and found this nice looking restaurant during our walk. We found it interesting when we viewed it from Oriental Pearl Tower. It has a nice view and good infrastructure.
However, personnel was more interested in going home than provide a good service. Besides, we order a beef hot pot that was disapointing to say the least. We enjoyed way better hot pots for a fraction of the price.
I will not recommend this place.

If you're coming to Shanghai for touring of the city, shopping and nightlife of the city then this hotel would be suited for you. It is in a great location - with great views of the Bund and River. Be sure to get a room with a view if you plan on spending any time in it. Yes the hotel has smoke free rooms but the smell travels throughout the air conditioning system anyway. Nice size beds and comfortable sheets - amenities nice. Breakfast buffet had plenty to offer in terms of Asian food, western offerings were limited and not well done. We were a family of four and we had a great view of the New Years Eve fireworks on the barges that evening. It is the views and the price of the room compared to other hotels on the Bund that make this a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Be sure to get something on the Executive Floor facing the river. The Executive Suites are the best...

Great location but offers nothing else in terms on facilities and choices.

Located next to the Russian Consulate and minutes walk to the Bund and Nanjing Road.

Choose rooms with a view of the Bund ... its worth to spend the extra money. The hotel has nothing else to offer.

Service is ok. Smoking not permitted in the lobby and other public areas - a plus point in China.

Nothing in the rooms, barely worked in the lobby. Spent half my time walking around downstairs trying to find signals. All of my family was the same so it wasnt my devices. Invest in some proper wifi and dont expect people to sit in your bar and order a drink just to get wifi. It should be complimentary for guests!

Our travel agent started by booking a big name hotel in the middle of Shanghai somewhere, but when I thought about it, I realised the whole point of coming to Shanghai was to see the big view. So the hunt was on to find Bund, Pudong and river views without breaking the bank. Seagull on the Bund turned out to be a brilliant choice - it is right on the bend of the river, so you see it all. The big skyscrapers, the elegant Bund building AND all the fantastically lit up river cruise boats, plus the hundreds and hundreds of working barges. For about $240 NZ dollars, we got the Scenery Suite Room (on the booking engine it's called Deluxe Suite) including breakfast and this was a jaw-dropping choice of a room/suite. The window in the lounge area looks across the river and down the bund, as does one of the windows in the bedroom. The other window in the bedroom looks up the river, so you get the whole panoply of the Shanghai view. (By the way, all the windows open so you can get some 'real' air in the room, although you can't call Shanghai air 'fresh' at all!) It was tempting to stay in all day and just watch the view. And the night view, with all the buildings lit up was postcard material. The other luxury of the Scenery Suite was having two bathrooms. Both were perfectly clean, with a great range of amenities. The rooms were also clean, and the bed was fine. The rest of the hotel featured art nouveau touches, with lots of stained glass decorations. Breakfast had a lot more asian options than western, as this hotel caters more to asian convention groups than independent western visitors, but there were all the usual offerings: toast, fruit, bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, etc. The restaurant out on the terrace has a wonderful view of the river - not necessary if you have the view from the room - and the food is only ordinary, but we went there because it was raining and there weren't a lot of restaurants we could see nearby. But across the road is the vintage Astor House hotel where Einstein, Chaplin and various other notables stayed in the 30s, and that was worth dashing through the rain for a look and a drink. Overall, our impression is that the Seagull was once a grand hotel (probably under another name?) but is a bit past its best now, although still clean and pleasant. But that's not why you stay here. It's all about the view and we would far rather stay here than at a big chain hotel in the middle of Shanghai and only get to see the big view if you come down to the Bund. You get it every minute of your stay here.

We stayed here for three nights this month. We chose this hotel because if going to Shanghai, I thought it would be great to have a nivce view of the river & the skyline, both of the Bund as well as the Pudong side. No other hotel with views was remotely in this price range, so it made it an easy choice.

The views are incredible! Located at the very top of the Bund, our room offered sweeping views of the entire Bund side skyline, and most of Pudong's as well. The swankier hotels were located behind this one, and there was no way their views could have been even as good as this one, despite a much higher cose per night.

The hotel itself is an aging beauty. It could benefit from some upgrading of cosmetics, as well as some deferred maitenance. However, it was still quite nice. Stunning entrance foyer & lobby, well appointed rooms, beautiful trimwork, and of course million dollar views. For what we paid, the value was outstanding, and underpriced.
