living in shanghai since about 10 years, today i decided to take small tapas in an "announced as typical tapas bar" close to my home
THe food arrived not hot - (feeling still leaving the froozen !!!)
I give you the price and pictures talk by itself
usually this kind of starter should be no more than 10-20 CNY per meal
I provide copy of bill + official invoice same time !
Also when leaving the place, I don't know if the lady is manager or owner, she seems to be a Spanish lady but didn't say "any word" very nice for supposed Spanish style !!!

In our third year in Shanghai we almost visited all the Spanish restaurants and bar in Shanghai, we enjoy a lot Chinese or international food but sometimes we need to forget noodles or dumplings and immerse ourselves in some almost real Spanish food. Maybe Sunday is not the best day of Malabar, and maybe 16:30 is not the best time, but come on, we are in China, 24/7 all year round.
The place is a very nice bar, decorated with Spanish old advertising and wood tables and chairs than can remind you a Spanish bar, the waitress, a Italian young woman (yes Italian) make us wait to order for at least 5 minutes while she was talking by phone "with speaker" with some Italian friend, niiice...
When we were ready to order, kitchen was closed...
- Hummm, okay can we order tapas?
- Only those 8 tapas, sorry kitchen are closed until six.
So we choose gazpacho, champiñones, salpicón de marisco and manchego en acéite de oliva.
The tapas are really overpriced for the size they offer, I can understand a high price if you order manchego cheese or some imported Spanish food, but when you can find the ingredients in every Chinese market, the whole menu can fit a Drinks Bar but not a Spanish Tapas Bar, the menu list is really short.
While trying to understand which kind of Spanish bar is Malabar, two Spanish girls arrive asking for something to eat, the answer the same, kitchen is closed, only this tapas available… Sorry Malabar friends, in every Spanish bar in the world, the waiter will offer to the hungry customer at any time of the day a sandwich (bocadillo) with chorizo, jamón, salchichón, atún, tortilla de patatas, etc. And there are a lot of things that must be arranged but any worker of the bar, there is no mystery in cutting salchichón or chorizo, in having ready tortilla de patatas or fried some croquetas.
Having some Spanish wines and some Spanish beers don’t mean is a Spanish bar. Well, in our opinion Malabar is really, really far away from a Spanish bar…
We are still triying to find aceitunas rellenas and patatas bravas in the menu, I hope some day we will visit Malabar again and we will change our opinion about it.

I love to meet here my friends and enjoy the atmosphere of a typical and real bar from Spain, noisy and plenty of people enjoying the meal and drinks while talking and laughing. Good beers and wine in their list and very interesting tapas selection, which star I think is the "secreto" pork meat.
My only recommendation for improvement is to try to expand the menu list with more tapas so that even if you go often you can always enjoy something different.
