Spanning across 4 storeys in a heritage protected building built in 1925, this is one of the largest food mall in Shanghai. It has been recently restored and refurbished in year 2012.As food is of utmost importance to us this food mall is a must visit for locals and non locals alike especially during festivals.Even on normal days there will be a crowd queued up to enter even before the doors are open at 0930.
The food hall is well designed ,easy to walk and shop.Signs and directions are prominently displayed.
The 1st floor is dedicated to fresh fruits, like mangoes, strawberries, apples, oranges, dragon fruit, pear, peach, durian .Confectioneries ,pastries, cakes, macaron, candies, biscuits, chocolates.Stacks of old Shanghai delicacies and snacks in beautiful wrap up and boxes are alluring. The boxes bring back the nostalgic feelings of many old shanghainese. This floor has also a wide section for raw ingredients and various types of meat.
Some raw and some preserved.Raw beef, muttons, chickens and chunks of sausages and bacons and pork legs.,duck tongues even the salted pork heads and ducks hanged up look very appetizing.Marinated meats of all sorts look good under the shining lights.
There are also various types of mushrooms, small and big all look good. There is a bakery Lilian's at this floor.
2nd floor has packaged food from across China, from local Shanghainese to Fujian to Guangdong,Heilongjiang and even Xinjiang snacks. They even have western chain of McD or McCafe now.
There are many local biscuits particularly at this floor and sweets.Peanut biscuits are among my favourites.,so also my dad's. Some have been beautifuly wrapped up or in beautiful containers. You can also choose the biscuits or the sweets and get them wrapped up.
3rd floor is my favourite as it is the food court. At the small stalls you will need to pay at the cashier and present the receipts to the vendors for your food.
There is a Yang's fried dumpling shengjian, beef noodles, rice sets, yong toufoo stall and a Japanese section. The spicy beef noodles are quite good.
Some restaurants at this floor too like the Nanxiang dumplings,Longji HongKong restaurant,Jia yu hao mian,Coco curry house, tea house and a bakery.
4th floor -there is a big thai food restaurant.
Overall it is very difficult to leave this place empty handed.Good place for those who want grocery made easy.
