“Like a resort in the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

We had another weekend stay in Shanghai and heard good things about the Mandarin Oriental Shanghai.
The experience started from the first step into the hotel. After a tight schedule during my week, I was looking forward to spent some quality time in the hotel and I was not disappointed. The room we had was amazing, breakfast was great. The first night we had dinner at the all day dining restaurant and it had a good variety of choices. The only section we didn't liked where the dessert area. It just didn't tasted fresh and it was at a low quality. The ice cream was just so so. We loved the fresh fish and sushi area.
The second night we had dinner at the Grill and it was really great. Nothing to complain from beginning to the end.
We will definitely be back.

I chose the Mandarin Oriental in Pudong as a departure gift to myself as I was leaving Shanghai after living in the city for some time. My first impression was of the attentive, but not intrusive, staff who immediately provided a feeling of welcome. My room had a view of both the Pearl Tower and the river and I could sit in comfort and watch the river traffic and the colours of the city as the sky darkened into evening. The club lounge provided a nice breakfast and I really enjoyed sharing a meal with friends at the Fifty 8 Grill which was buzzing with diners. The service was quick and the food was delicious. The hotel is situation on the river side and it is an easy walk to the main shopping area and the subway. It was a memorable way to say goodbye to Shanghai.

Room Tip: Try for a room with a river view

No one does it like Mandarin Oriental!! I heard this hotel was just launched, so I did not expect to receive the usual high standard of service from this establishment in Shanghai, but wow, to my surprise, they did it again. I had to attend an evening function and had to fix my necklace before the fair, rushed down to the Concierge hoping they would help me. I was fully prepared that I had to go without any jewelry... They somehow managed to have it sent and delivered back in time for my functions all within two hours prior to the venue.

The pool was great, Spa is the usual high standard of Mandarin Oriental touch, afternoon high tea was elegantly presented, and above all the staff was well above the other establishments. Not much near the hotel, but you would never get this level of service elsewhere.

I recently shared a spectacular twin room at the Mandarin Oriental, it was luxurious, the Staff were very attentive, plus the pool and gym had many excellent extra inclusions such as rainwater shower, bottles of fresh water, fruit and warm beds to relax on after your swim. The hotel is very new, it is beginning to establish itself in the south Pudong region not only as an wonderful place to stay, but also, a hotel with many excellent eating and dining options.

The aspect of the room was wonderful, overlooking the Huangpo River. The view and excellent room inclusions allowed one plenty of time to relax and unwind while enjoying the ever changing busy water front. The rooms are extremely well appointed and equipped with many entertainment choices, such as a dock with speakers and two TV's, one in the bedroom and the other in the bathroom that can be tuned to music, entertainment, or movies.

The bathrooms are luxurious, light and beautifully furbished and for further privacy there were two separate cubicles for shower and toilet. The hotel provides an array of quality bathroom inclusions such as shampoos, creams and other useful items to make your stay even more complete.

The walk-in robe helps separate the luggage from the room and provides those extra useful items to make your stay even more comfortable. In the room there is a lounge area, plus desk space near an open shelf/bar area, so the rooms successfully combine different spaces in order to relax, work or chill out with a glass of wine overlooking the river. There are the usual options of eating in the room or enjoying the various dining spaces around the hotel.

One two separate occasions I ate the buffet lunch and dinner at the Zest restaurant, the food selection was very good, some items were cooked as requested in front of you. There was a wide range of international foods from Asian to Western choices plus fresh fruit, it was good value.

The Fifty 8 Grill was my favourite eating experience, definitely a good place to go with a small to medium sized group. The presentation, choices and dining concept of sharing a variety of dishes made one feel like they were in a private home and enjoying a variety of flavours and dishes that one might not usually cook for oneself, but would like to try!

Although the food in the Yoong Yi Ting was truely amazing, the freshness of the ingredients and the presentation are all very impressive, it was not perhaps the right place to dine alone. There seemed to be fewer options for one, although I am still pleased I had the opportunity to try a few dishes.

I would definitely love to stay here again and certainly would be happy to eat in any of the restaurants on other occasions. The only main concern was the taxi drivers are still getting use to finding the hotel, so do ensure you have the phone number handy. The hotel is within walking distance to the Line 2 metro, IFC or Super Brand Mall and the Bund.

At all times the Staff were courteous and helpful, they organised train tickets to Hangzhou and advised us on the best way to make our train connection from the Hotel, plus places to eat while in Hangzhou. The level of service, attention and care was impressive for a new hotel.

Room Tip: High floors overlooking the river and access to the club.

I stayed at this hotel last month as part of their opening buy one night get one free promotion. We stayed on the club level and everything about the stay was first class. From the staff in the lounge to the trainers at the gym, everyone went above and beyond the call of duty. Service was their top priority. As an example, I came back into the lobby after a long run and I was sweating looking tired. The doorman opened the door for me and then ran over to the front desk to get me a bottle of cold water without me ever asking for anything.

The gym is great and the pool is awesome for lap swimming. Food in the club lounge is top notch and drinks are poured liberally and strong. The rooms are nice, but really, all hotel rooms are pretty similar inside. It is the service that makes a hotel stand out, especially in China where apathetic service is standard even at some of the highest rated hotels. The Mandarin seems to have rightly put the focus on service and I give it a well deserved Excellent rating.

Really enjoyed our short stay. Both Zest and 58deg are wonderful restaurants. The pool and spa area were very relaxing. The staff were the most helpful that I have encountered anywhere. Highly recommended.

Me and wife arrived at night time and stay in Club Executive Room. The hotel was just operated in two months. Everythings still look fresh and new.
The room was a bit small if compare to Jakarta Mandarin Oriental or any other similar 5 stars hotel in Indonesia. The toilet and bath room are excellent. AC works efficiently and silently.
The breakfast was great with good quality foods.
We appreciate very much for the excellent services and friendly staff of the 2nd floor Club Lounge staffs.
The only minus is the location of the hotel which is quite remote in Pudong area.
