Not sure why the contradictory reviews here, Henkes is going to be the gold standard for Western restaurants in Shanghai for many years to come. Pizza is a specialty, but just about anything on the menu is good. I live in Shanghai and visit Henkes at least once a month. Perhaps visitors don't realize that Shanghai is generally very expensive so value for money is not going to be a headline for any restaurant in this town. But if you want a good meal with nice atmosphere and consistent good and service, this is the place in town.

A bit difficult to find at first, Henkes in Shanghai made a very pleasant first impression. The ambiance is warm and an outdoor area looks inviting during more sunny days.
We ordered various dishes to share from the Italian themed menu.
Antipasti platter looked and tasted decent. The bread was the star, very crunchy and fresh. Tuna Salad and cold cut platter were good. We looked forward to try the Kale risotto, Salmon Pizza. Risotto tasted good, but the texture looked like an undercooked congee. The Pizza was large but we felt the combination didn't work. Too much cold Spinach and cold Salmon on a white Pizza that was too soft. We ordered a Margarita as a 2nd chance but were again dissapointed. While it looked apetizing, the crust wasn't good enough.

The bread n'butter pudding was awfully presented, but tasted nice. The rubarb-apple crumble was more of a compote and the coconut cake had not enough coconut in it.

Overall the dining experience was ok, but Shanghai is a very competitive market and soso isn't good enough to keep people coming back for more.

The service was good, however when we showed a complete worn-out napkin to the foreign Manager, he brought us a new one without a word of acknowledgement. This is again not good enough.

When a table of 5 leaved and not a single person of the service crew including the Manager farewells you, it seems their business won't miss us when we won't return.

We went for a dinner without a booking. It was 80% full but we managed to get a table. Food was excellent. We tried deep fried squid, rocket salad and Wagu beef. Nice atmosphere. Service was just ok though.

Was taken here by a friend who recommended the 800 g steak - excellent choice. Very tender, nicely seasoned and cooked just the way I like it.
Maitre d' looked after us exceptionally well.
I would definitely return to sample the rest of the menu.
