Good food. Surprisingly the biryani served was made from desi ghee. The ambience was good but the crowd was too noisy.

Modern comfortable Indian restaurant without the Bollywood music. Excellent, very nicely presented food that only misses if you`re expecting all of your regular high street curry options. The onion bhaji is fantastic and not drenched in grease like so many other restaurants. We chose the green masala madras and opted for lamb, which turned out to be a great choice, packed with flavor. The Yellow dhal is notable, the cheese stuffed Nan turned up a little bit on the cold side.

We stayed in shanghai for about 2 weeks and visited Saffron more than 5 times.
Saffron is a pretty new restaurant which was opened just 4-5 months back. Its a kind of family owned business and the owner is the chief chef .
We tasted almost all the items on the menu and they were just awesome.
The chef had some homemade mango pickle which was delicious.
They also have a lunch buffet.
I highly recommend to visit this restaurant.

Saffron is a new entrant to Shanghai.. located in the posh and busy shopping center in Puxi and very close to American Consulate.. kinda hidden in an inner road not easily known to by-passers in the Huahai Zhong road.. Need to know about its presence to reach the restaurant.. but you will be handsomely rewarded with mouth-watering delicacies..
The ambiance is very good, very spacious with lots of tables/chairs arranged neatly covering entire floor area.. playing very mild Indian music.. a welcome change from the jarring music in other places.. Very pleasant service by chinese waiters talking in nice English.. the table silver was very good, plates and pots were on clay..

Coming to food, the tomato soup and mushroom soups were very tasty.. in right texture and spice.. Stuffed paratha with spicey mixed vegetable side dish were excellent.. I liked the garnish on top of the gravy as well.. the Biryani was even better..

Overall one of the best Indian restaurants in Shanghai.. but I thought it was a bit on the higher side on price.. for 2 adults and a kid, it cost 475RMB.. relative to other places, I felt this was a bit higher.. but am not complaining as I believe i paid it right for the tasty food.

Saffron is a charming Indian restaurant located on Dongping Lu, in the French Concession. It offers a great ambiance and great food. My husband and I stopped in for lunch. We had the Samosas (morsels of crispy deliciousness), Chicken Curry (nicely cooked, with great aromatics), Vindaloo and Basmati Rice. All the dishes were great, but small (though satisfying) for the price. We will definitely be going back, to try more of their dishes including their drinks.
