“Great view but more expensive than you would expect”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

This bar just off the Bund is located just above a backpacker's hostel. On that basis we expected it to be relatively cheap but it was more expensive than we thought.

However 'happy hour' starts from 5pm for 2 - 3 hours and drinks were half price. We paid 150 RMB for 2 wine and 2 beers during happy hour.

The view from the balcony is quite impressive though not quite as good as some of the 5 star establishments on the Bund itself.

“Great view but the service is just too damn slow...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

So yes the views are great and one of the best you can find from the bund looking at the Pudong skyline. However the service is just so bad for the prices. We went for after work drinks with my colleagues and it took them more than 30 min to get me my burger which did not taste much at the end. The worst is that my colleague who order his smoked chicken sandwich at the same time as me got it 15 min before me. So yes, all in all great view, expensive drinks and very poor service.

“Fun place, great views, so-so prices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

Captain Bar contrasts pretty starkly to most other places on the Bund. It sits on the rooftop of a hostel and is accessed by a pretty old lift and then a flight of stairs. The bar is very dark and it is difficult to see the clever fit-out to make the inside look lime a boat. The outside patio provides terrific views across the Huangpu River to the Pudong skyline.

A tankard of Tsingtao is 60RMB. This is expensive for China, but reasonable for the Bund, where it is difficult to source a cheap beer. It is all about the view and they charge accordingly. Still rooftop drinking is always fun

“The view is special at night.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2013

This rooftop bar, above the Captain's Hostel, is worth visiting just for the view alone. Just off the Bund is a really unremarkable building. The neon sign only half works, the lift only takes you to the 5th floor and you walk up a metal staircase to find the bar. Then things get better. The bar is decorated as a pirate ship, inside is non smoking and pleasantly air conditioned. The piece de resistance is the rooftop terrace. At night the view here is spectacular, the river and all the important tall buildings in the Pudong area are lit up like a Christmas tree. The food here is unremarkable, being typical Western fast food, the beer is (for the Bund) reasonably priced, but get here early to get an outside seat. Happy hour is until 8pm, relax and enjoy the view!
