We visited on a Sunday afternoon/evening and it was as expected, very crowded, with lots of tourists. Still, I supposed it is a 'must do' for Shanghai as it does have interesting architecture and lets you feel like you're seeing old Shanghai. It's good for people watching and wandering about as local Chinese people get wedding photos taken and old people sit around and drink tea.

We visited Yugarden on a Tuesday morning, before 10a.m., before the crowds began to assemble. The garden was constructed in the 16th century, and the city has taken great care to preserve its beauty and heritage.
As we walked through the stone paths, we crossed wooden bridges over ponds teeming with Koi.
The landscaping is incredible - it is hard to believe that it was conceived centuries ago. Rugged walls of rock surround beautiful gardens of blossoming trees and ponds. The architecture of the buildings within the gardens is typical of the classical style of this period. Just beautiful!
We strolled through this peaceful "oasis" for about 2 hours, but one could spend much more time, especially because there are so many photographic opportunities, and buildings to tour
within the garden.
The tourist area just outside the main entrance has been very well designed, and seems somewhat more refined that other tourist shopping areas we have seen here. By the time we left, about 11:30a.m., the crowds were increasing. The easiest way to arrive at the gardens, is to take the subway/metro, right to the station with the same name, and follow the signs.

This is a beautiful garden, with good plantings, interesting old buildings, a few ponds, twisty paths, etc. Also a lot of people. If you have in mind sitting in serene reflection on the beauty and tranquility around you...this is not your place. Worth a visit, but you will be fighting the crowds from beginning to end.
