“Peaceful at times”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

A lovely little garden, amazingly peaceful considering it's in the middle of a huge, noisy chaotic city.
My advice would be, never go when it is a Chinese holiday ( that goes for every attraction in Shanghai). We wandered around the garden several times slowly stopping and sitting to watch the fish. There are nice little pathways to wander off the main track. Just outside the park are many stalls and shops selling all sorts of things, there are touts selling fakes stuff but usually a firm no thank you will get rid of them.

“Busy market and tranquil gardens all in one.”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

The market is a busy place and interesting to see. The Mongolian ice cream stand was fun. The market is around a very tranquil garden so if the hustle and bustle of the market becomes too much you can escape to the gardens,

“Beautiful & Scenic”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

The Garden is almost hidden inside of the bustling outer perimeter of shops and restaurants, but once inside, it is a beautiful garden in true Asian style. Every turn offers another photo opportunity so keep your camera out at all times. Definitely bring some crackers or chips as the pond has huge schools of poi that literally swim on top of each other to get to the grub. They will come as close as they can to get it; makes a great picture! If you have little ones, they will absolutely LOVE it! The adults get a charge out of it too :-). The cost is around $ 7 USD per person, definitely worth it.

“Yu Yuan Garden”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

The garden is a little ancient and poetic island in the middle of the old town of Shanghai and a cluster of various lively markets. Unfortunately it is crowded and hardly enjoyable on the weekends.

“Yu Yuan Garden is a tourist trap”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

Over priced pseudo "Chinese" area selling either overpriced or poor plastic trinkets and souvenirs .but still manages to have the usual fast food outlets you will see in your home country, so you don't have to experience anything Chinese! The Garden of Contentment sounds a lot better but really you can see and experience far better in Suzhou, less than an hour by train. Shanghai is first and foremost a commercial city and not representative of China.
