Yu Yuang and Yu Yuang Garden are on every tourist's list for Shanghai. The Yu Yuang district is called Chinatown of Shanghai. Today it is one large souvenirs' shops compound. You are really better off buying chinese tea at the airport in Shanghai than in Yu Yuang shopping area. At the airport prices are the same or the smaller, but the quality is higher and the packaging is much, much nicer !!!. Same goes for souvenirs.
The Yu Yuang gardens are nice, but are you really interested in seeing pavilion where Bill Clinton had his tea ????.

We set out to look for this but got thoroughly lost the first time, though did manage to find the old 'China Town' that surrounds the Garden. Next day we'd almost given up when suddenly came upon the entrance to Yu Yuan Garden, and were so happy to have found it. Beautiful surroundings, a lovely spot to wander around - with no traffic and therefore no nervous glances around for the next thing that's trying to run you over!

Lovely Chinese garden with the pre-requisite rocks, water , plants & trees. There's a lovely view at every turn & lots of photo opportunities. The buildings, corridors & tea house are all beautiful. Gets very crowded but still very worthwhile.

Thanks to our guide, we found this garden to be very interesting. She was able to give us some of the history which made it even more interesting. It is such a maze that one would need a guide in order not to just go in circles. This garden is definitely worth a visit if you have an extra hour or so in Shanghai

This serene garden was very crowded in mid-morning on a week day yet we could find quite corners. It isn't very big yet the layout is such a puzzle of buildings, ponds and plants that you feel it is larger. We walked away with a lot of pictures. We did not take a tour so I don't know if we missed much history beyond what we read in the travel guides.
