300 Nanjing Road - step out of the crowds, grab a cold beer, watch the crowds below from the second floor windows and enjoy a perfectly cooked steak. Atmosphere was good and the owner, Marcel was a real down to earth character. Highly recommended.

I visited the City Bull at 300 Nanjing Road near the Apple store. The food was poor and they served Stella Artois that was either fake or several months old. A horrible experience

If you are looking for a £6 or 60 Yuan per head meal, you are in the wrong place. The food served is quality. Service is good. It was nice to go somewhere peaceful away from the loud Chinese restaurant with a bizzarre array of dishes from the night before. City Bull is highly recommended.

I really love City Bull. They have an excellent menu with lots of great burgers, steak and chicken dishes and they carry Budvar beer! The place on Hong Mei Lu was renovated in the winter of 2010 so it looks great with lots of room for you and some friends to come have a nice evening. They have lots of TV's showing mostly sports and they have a foosball table and a pool table up stairs. On the weekends they also sometime have some live music playing.

I had been going to this place for the last few years since I came to Shanghai back when it was Julie's Canadian Restaurant... maybe once per week for lunch or dinner because the food is so good. I love Chinese food, but sometimes you need that "taste of home" - that comfort food that allows you to keep living as an expat in a foreign country.

FOOD
Julie's (now City Bull) has always had great food. I love their fruit smoothies, their crepes, their salads and their soups. Try the broccoli soup, the mushroom soup, and especially their outstanding pea soup! And I would be remiss to not mention their steaks. You cannot find a better steak for the price anywhere in Shanghai. My favorite steak there is the ribeye - a great steak for a great price. Make sure to try it!

STAFF
The owner is a very friendly Canadian guy named Marcel. He has made me feel welcome like this place was my home. He runs the place well and brings in talent to help him make the place great. Thank you, Marcel! You have given me a home in Shanghai!

They have great Chinese and Filipino managers running the place on a daily basis. Tommy makes you feel like his brother, Allen is a stand up guy, and Alex keeps the great drinks flowing. They have done an excellent job in managing City Bull and making sure things runs smoothly. If you have any problems, just go tell them and they will make it right.

The waitresses are gorgeous and friendly. Unlike many of the other bars this place seems to have found the perfect balance between the money-hungry, fake-drink begging girls of the "buy-me-drink" bars and the unfriendly and often rude waitresses of places like Big Bamboo. The waitresses at City Bull are fun, and happy to sit down and have a real drink with you, but are also actually working as waitresses, and will never pressure you to buy them a drink. They make you feel welcome andhelp you and your friends have a great time without running up your bill.

BAND
Shortly after the rennovations a few months ago to combine the bar next door which used to be called Roger's and the restuarant side which used to be called Julie's, the place was re-branded to be called City Bull - with a focus on their excellent steaks. I actually felt the place briefly lost some of its fun "bar" mentality when this happened, until about 2 months ago. Marcel and Tommy managed to find something to make this place so incredible that after a few years of coming here, I was actually inspired to suggest this place be listed on TripAdvisor and write a review - something I have never done (request a new listing). What did they do? They found the best Filipino cover band in Shanghai, and got them to play from 9pm - 1am 6 nights per week (every night except Monday).

This band rocks! I don't know why it is so hard to find good bands in Shanghai. And on Hongmei road (Foreigner Street) there are about 4-5 other bands, but none of them are very good. It is great to finally have a good band here! They are not a full band - just 3 people.

GUITAR: There is a guy named Glen who is the guitarist. His fingers fly over that axe with lightning speed - he can bust out incredible rhythm riffs or light up the night with solos. And he has a great voice. Ask him to sing Bob Marley or Tom Petty some time!

What band would be complete without eye candy, right? Two goregous ladies that sing...
VOCAL 1: Idess has a voice like an angel... an angel who rocks! Wow! This girl has chops. Really she has an incredible range from slow and sultry to heavy rockin. I personally love to hear her sing Janis Joplin, Metallica, Supertramp, and Ram Jam. But really, she can do it all!

VOCAL 2: Maria is more of the rocker chick in the band. She likes to belt out GnR and AC/DC. The cool thing about her is that she is awesome with the crowd. Lots of funny antics... and sometimes she can even be convinced to take up the guitar and play a few songs herself!

They are an incredible addition to City Bull and have brought back the fun bar feeling to it at night... beyond bringing it back, they have amped it up to a level that I go 4-5 times per week now. They play everything from old classic rock, to heavy metal, to modern favorites from Adele and Shakira. And they take most requests and are happy to have a few brave singers join them for a song if you've go the talent and/or the stones to get on stage!

OVERALL
For me, the combination of the incredible food, great people, and the awesome band has made City Bull on HongMei Road the best place to hang out in Shanghai 6 nights a week! A very, very BIG thanks to Marcel for giving me a home away from home.
