Owner description: Modern, electric street filled with shops, eateries, and lovely restaurants tucked away up above the street level. Some can be tricky to find but are worth the effort.

Any girl will understand... Great street for shopping! Me + city is a great place to find work clothes of you want something that isnt everywhere else and relatively cheap.
Eat in the first foodhall its delicious and has a great atmosphere!! Loved seeing all the little sweets and buying some not knowing what they are lol

I can only speak to East Nanjing Rd. as that was all I could take. Being continually hit upon by women for a "lady massage" was very annoying, to the point that I left and went back to the hotel. At least the independent vendors selling stuff like toys understand what NO means. The masseuses on the other hand follow you around and annoy the heck out of you. Being tall, older and a westerner is like being a light attracting moths. I was able to make it back to the Metro entrances without being accosted by walking closely to two American women. It looked like we were a group so they left me alone, I thanked the women for helping me out of ourselves.
The street itself is pretty cool, large mixed use pedestrian outdoor mall with all types of shops and brands. Prices are inflated of course to enhance the status of the item. I don't know anyone that actually shopped there, only browsed. Better deals can be found in other parts of the city. If you are looking for Shanghai memorabilia try the Yuyuan Bazaar, for silks and suits try the textile area in the Metro station near the Science and Technology Museum, and for jewelry go to the International Pearl Market!

We come to Shanghai every year and go to Nanging Rd. Went there on Chinese New Years day. It was awesome. Fewer peddlers and hustlers than usual, packed with people and excitement. Seemed very safe, but as in any big city and big crowds, beware of pickpockets. Keep stuff zipped up. We took a subway there from Pudong and had a ball

There are a few hidden gems on Nanjing Lu, there is a second hand english bookshop near the east nanjing train station and a few great restaurants down allyways around west nanjing.

However for the most part it is worth only a visit to walk along the road and thats it. The shops are overpriced, however around Christmas the decorations are amazing.

There are better shopping places elsewhere in Shanghai

This road is horrific... so many people asking you to buy their watch, bag or dvd... or better yet the pimps asking if you need a lady. If these types would be removed from the street the atmosphere would be so much better. It is a nice walk from East Nanjing to the Bund.. and that is a must see.. just walk quickly and do not make any eye contact or remarks to anyone ... if they approach keep going
